Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the environmental damage caused by plastic and potential solutions from governments and individuals. The ideas are relevant, such as the impact on animals and the role of recycling plants. However, the development is somewhat limited. For instance, the explanation of individual actions is brief, and the discussion on government solutions could be more nuanced. While the position is clear, the supporting arguments lack depth and specific examples, which prevents the response from reaching a higher band. The ideas are generally relevant but remain at a somewhat superficial level throughout the essay.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. There is a basic attempt at progression, moving from the problem to the solutions. However, the use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or inaccurate, such as 'in last they die' or 're helps to reduce'. Referencing is sometimes unclear, and the transition between ideas can feel abrupt. While the overall structure is coherent, the lack of sophisticated linking words and occasional awkward phrasing in transitions limits the flow of the argument. Paragraphing is present but could be more effectively managed to enhance the logical progression of ideas.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks the range and precision required for higher bands. There are several instances of awkward word choices and collocation errors, such as 'polastic pollution', 'searching a food', and 'destruction for to the natural enviroment'. The student relies on basic vocabulary and repeats certain terms like 'non-biodegradable' and 'plastic materials' frequently. While the meaning is generally clear, the lack of variety and the presence of spelling errors (e.g., 'plannet', 'enviroment') indicate a limited lexical range that struggles to convey ideas with sophistication or naturalness.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede the reader's flow. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('plastic pollution, are damaging', 'plastic materials plays'), incorrect article usage, and awkward sentence construction ('the government is spending their budget for construction of recycling plant that lead to mitigate'). Punctuation is also inconsistent. While the student attempts complex sentences, these are often marred by errors. The frequency of these mistakes suggests that the student has not yet mastered the control of complex structures, keeping the score in the mid-range.
