Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the environmental damage caused by plastic and the potential solutions from governments and individuals. However, the development is uneven. While the environmental impact is discussed with some examples, the solutions section is less detailed and the essay ends abruptly mid-sentence, which prevents a full conclusion. The position is clear, but the lack of a completed conclusion and the limited depth in the second half of the essay mean that some ideas are under-developed. To improve, ensure all parts of the prompt are given equal weight and that the essay is fully completed within the time limit.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organized into paragraphs, and there is a logical progression of ideas. Cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Furthermore', and 'Firstly' are used to link sentences. However, the use of these devices is sometimes mechanical, and there are instances where the flow is interrupted by grammatical errors. The abrupt ending significantly impacts the overall coherence, as the final paragraph is incomplete. To reach a higher band, focus on using a wider variety of cohesive devices more naturally and ensure that each paragraph has a clear, completed structure that contributes to the overall argument.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the student to convey their message clearly. There are attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'ecosystem', 'fertility', and 'menace'. However, there are several errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'sever damage' (severe), 'food rappers' (wrappers), and 'mass public' (the general public). Additionally, there are some spelling errors like 'century’s' (centuries). The range is sufficient to communicate, but the lack of precision and the presence of errors in basic collocations limit the score. Expanding the range of academic vocabulary and focusing on correct word forms would be beneficial.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede the reader, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('these materials does not', 'many professional believes') and incorrect preposition usage ('in term of'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with the use of apostrophes. While the meaning is generally clear, the frequency of these errors prevents the essay from reaching a higher band. To improve, the student should focus on basic subject-verb agreement, pluralization, and proofreading for common grammatical slips.
