Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, identifying environmental damage and suggesting solutions for both governments and individuals. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the explanation of how plastic affects animals is brief and lacks specific detail. The points made are relevant but remain at a surface level, lacking the depth required for a higher band. The position is clear throughout, but the arguments could be better supported with more concrete examples or deeper analysis to fully satisfy the requirements for a higher score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for the two main questions, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Furthermore', 'Moreover', and 'In conclusion', though some are used repetitively or in a slightly mechanical way. The progression of ideas is generally clear, but the transition between sentences within paragraphs can be abrupt at times. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the overall structure helps the reader follow the argument, even if the flow is not always sophisticated.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks variety and precision. There is frequent repetition of basic terms like 'plastic', 'bags', 'bottles', and 'problem'. Some word choices are inaccurate, such as 'not got for health' (likely meaning 'not good') and 'deceases' (likely meaning 'diseases'). The student attempts to use some topic-specific vocabulary, but the range is limited, and the errors in word choice occasionally draw attention. To improve, the student should focus on using a wider range of synonyms and more precise collocations related to environmental issues.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay relies heavily on simple sentence structures. While there are attempts at complex sentences, they often contain grammatical errors, such as 'it cause a pollution' (subject-verb agreement) and 'it be solve' (passive voice error). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are errors in article usage and verb forms throughout the text. The frequency of these errors is noticeable and occasionally impedes the flow of reading. A greater variety of error-free complex structures is needed to move into a higher band.
