Student answer (Band 8.0)

In recent years, plastic waste has emerged as one of the most pressing environmental challenges facing modern society. The increasing use of disposable plastice products has caused serious damage to oceans, wildlife and natural ecosystems. Although plastic is convenient and affordable, its excessive consumption has significant long-term consequences for the environment. Therefore, effective measures should be taken by both governments and individuals to address this growing problem.

One of the most significant effects of plastic waste is environmental pollution. Plastic materials can remain in the environment for extremely long periods rather than breaking down quickly. A considerable amount of plastic waste eventually reaches rivers and oceans, where it can negatively affect marine ecosystems. Furthermore, animals may mistake plastic for food or encounter discarded plastic in their habitats. Consequently, excessive plastic waste can threaten wildlife and contribute to the loss of biodiversity. Over time, larger plastic items can also break down into microplastics, which may contaminate water and soil.

Another major concern is the increasing pressure that plastic waste places on waste-management systems. The widespread use of disposable items, such as plastic bags, bottles and food packaging, generates enormous amounts of unnecessary waste. If these materials are not properly recycled or disposed of, they may accumulate in landfills or enter the natural environment. Therefore, society's dependence on single-use plastics needs to be reduced.

Several measures can be taken to tackle this issue. Governments should introduce stricter regulations on unnecessary single-use plastics and encourage businesses to use environmentally friendly packaging. In addition, recycling facilities should be improved and made more accessible to the public. Individuals can also contribute by using reusable bags and bottles, avoiding excessive packaging and disposing of waste responsibly. Raising public awareness about the consequences of plastic pollution could also encourage people to adopt more sustainable habits.

In conclusion, plastic waste has serious consequences for the environment, particularly for oceans, wildlife and natural ecosystems. While completely eliminating plastic may not be realistic, its unnecessary use can be significantly reduced. A combination of government action, responsible business practices and individual effort is essential to protect the environment for future generations.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The response fully addresses all parts of the prompt. You clearly identify the environmental damage caused by plastic, specifically mentioning marine ecosystems, wildlife threats, and waste management pressures. Furthermore, you provide balanced solutions involving both government intervention and individual responsibility. The position is clear from the introduction and maintained throughout the essay. Ideas are well-developed and supported with logical explanations, such as the breakdown of plastic into microplastics. To reach the highest band, ensure that examples are even more specific—for instance, instead of mentioning 'animals' generally, you could refer to specific species or well-documented phenomena like the Great Pacific Garbage Patch to add depth.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the transition between the problem and the solution is smooth. You make effective use of cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'Consequently', and 'In addition' to link your arguments. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different aspects of the task. The flow is natural, and the reader is guided through your argument without difficulty. To improve further, ensure that the relationship between sentences is always explicit, though your current use of referencing is already quite strong.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.5

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for an IELTS essay. Terms like 'pressing environmental challenges', 'biodiversity', 'sustainable habits', and 'waste-management systems' are used accurately. There is a minor spelling error ('plastice'), but this is a rare slip. You show an awareness of collocation and style, maintaining a formal tone throughout. To achieve a higher band, try to incorporate more sophisticated, less common lexical items or idiomatic phrases that fit naturally into the context, such as 'mitigate the impact' or 'a multifaceted approach'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The essay displays a good variety of complex sentence structures, such as the use of conditional clauses ('If these materials are not properly recycled...') and concessive clauses ('Although plastic is convenient...'). The majority of your sentences are error-free, and your control over punctuation is solid. The grammar is accurate, and the few minor slips do not impede communication. To push into the 8.0+ range, aim for even greater variety in your sentence beginnings and ensure that your complex structures are consistently error-free, as this will demonstrate a higher level of grammatical flexibility.
