Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, identifying environmental damage caused by plastic and suggesting solutions for both governments and individuals. The ideas are relevant, such as the impact on wildlife and the accumulation of waste. However, the development is somewhat limited; for instance, the claim that '60% of garbage is created by plastic' lacks context or evidence, and the solutions could be more thoroughly explained. The position is clear throughout, but the essay would benefit from more detailed examples and a more sophisticated analysis of the environmental consequences to reach a higher band.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for problems and solutions, and a conclusion. There is a general progression of ideas. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and repetitive (e.g., 'Another problem', 'There are some solutions'). Additionally, there are issues with punctuation, such as missing spaces after commas and semicolons (e.g., 'bags , bottles', 'unavoidable;however'), which occasionally disrupts the flow. Referencing is generally clear, but the transition between ideas could be smoother to improve the overall coherence of the argument.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the student to communicate their ideas clearly. There are some attempts at topic-specific vocabulary like 'waste management', 'global warming', and 'eco system'. However, there are several spelling errors (e.g., 'wold', 'disspose', 'blobe') and word choice inaccuracies (e.g., 'effect severe' instead of 'have severe effects', 'create lines in animal' which is unclear). The range is sufficient to convey the message, but the lack of precision and the presence of spelling errors prevent a higher score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally conveyed, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'it damage the nature', 'plastic take long time'), article usage, and sentence construction. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with several instances of missing spaces after punctuation marks. While the student attempts complex sentences, these are often where the errors are most noticeable. The errors do not completely impede communication, but they are frequent enough to be distracting.
