Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 1.0
The response is completely off-topic. The prompt asks for an essay about the environmental damage caused by plastic and solutions to this issue. Instead, the student has written an essay about the negative effects of smartphones and social media on young people. Because the response fails to address the task prompt entirely, it cannot be assessed for task achievement in relation to the topic provided. According to the IELTS criteria, a response that is completely unrelated to the task must be penalised heavily, as it does not address the requirements of the prompt at all.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is organised into paragraphs, and there is an attempt to use cohesive devices such as 'To set the ball rolling', 'Nevertheless', and 'To recapitulate'. However, the logical progression is hindered by the fact that the content is irrelevant to the prompt. The referencing is sometimes unclear, and the flow between ideas is mechanical. While there is a basic structure of an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion, the lack of relevance to the topic makes the overall coherence ineffective.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is limited and often used incorrectly. Phrases like 'jet-set days' and 'portables' are used in contexts where they do not make sense. There are also errors in collocation, such as 'mitigate by focus on' (should be 'mitigated by focusing on') and 'tackle this menance' (spelling error). The range of vocabulary is insufficient to express complex ideas, and the word choice is frequently imprecise, which occasionally causes difficulty for the reader.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.5
The grammar is weak, with frequent errors that impede communication. There are significant issues with subject-verb agreement ('it have', 'mankind are getting'), tense usage, and sentence structure. Many sentences are fragmented or grammatically incorrect, such as 'it leads to affect their studies' and 'they should be victim of such bad health problems'. The range of structures is limited, and the frequent errors in basic grammar make the text difficult to follow.
