Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response attempts to address all parts of the prompt, discussing the environmental damage caused by plastic, such as air pollution from burning and its presence in food, along with solutions like government bans and paper bags. However, the ideas are often limited, repetitive, and under-developed. For instance, the discussion on gases focuses heavily on a somewhat confused explanation of oxygen and carbon dioxide. While the writer's position is discernible, the lack of depth and logical elaboration places this response squarely in Band 5.0.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The essay is divided into paragraphs, but the overall progression is difficult to follow due to disjointed sentences and abrupt shifts in ideas. Cohesive devices are used awkwardly or inaccurately, such as 'THEREFORE', 'NOWADAYS', and 'IN ADDITIONALY'. Paragraphing is attempted, but individual paragraphs lack internal unity and clear logical flow. Reference words are sometimes unclear, and the mechanical nature of the linking words disrupts the natural progression of the argument, reflecting the descriptors for Band 5.0.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is basic, repetitive, and frequently inaccurate. The student relies on simple terms and makes noticeable errors in word choice and word formation, such as 'HARMFULL FOR ENVIRONMENT', 'INCREASABLE CO2', and 'QNIQE TECHNIQE'. Words are often used with incorrect parts of speech, for example, 'AWARE' used as a verb ('all people have to aware'). These frequent lexical errors cause some difficulty for the reader and prevent the score from reaching a higher band, aligning best with Band 4.5, rounded to 5.0 based on the attempt to cover various topic-related concepts.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.0
The writing demonstrates a very limited range of structures, with frequent errors in simple and complex sentences alike. Basic grammatical rules regarding verb forms, tenses, and subject-verb agreement are regularly broken, such as 'HAVE MADE BY PLASTIC', 'WHO COULD NOT DESTROY AUTOMATIC', and 'GOVERNEMTS SHOULD BE TAKE A LEGEL ACTIONS'. Punctuation and sentence boundaries are also problematic, often leading to fragmented thoughts and distortion of meaning. These persistent, frequent errors significantly hinder readability, justifying a Band 4.0 score.
