IELTS Writing Task 1 question
You have just read an article in a national newspaper which claims that town centres in your country all look very similar to each other. You don't fully agree with this opinion.
Write a letter to the editor of the newspaper. In your letter
- say which points in the article you agree with
- explain ways in which your town centre is different from most other town centres
- offer to give a guided tour of your town to the writer of the article
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Madam,
I am writing this letter to let you know about certain unclear information about the town centres mentioned in the national newspaper.
I agree with some of the facts that town centres have equal number of schools and each has its own hospital. Each of them have greenlands, where people can walk and have an excape from their daily stress.
Anyways, I wanted to mention that my town does not has a bank, because of this, we have to travel to the oher town centres. Moreover, the hospital in my town, does not has professional doctors available 24/7, which again forces us to visit other town's hospital.
Because of the reasons discussed above, I would like you to visit the town so that you can see whats going on here and to visit neighboring town on the same day. By seeing both, you will see exactly what we are lagging behind in. A side-by-side visit will make our gaps impossible to ignore.
Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to hearing from you.
Kind regards,
Shokat

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address the three requested points: you identify features you accept, describe differences in your town, and invite the writer to visit. The lack of a bank and limited access to professional doctors are relevant, specific contrasts, and the offer of a visit is clear. However, the points you agree with are not fully explained: saying towns have an equal number of schools and each has a hospital is broad, and the claim that each has green spaces does not show which parts of the article you are responding to. The tour offer is also somewhat indirect because you suggest visiting a neighbouring town rather than clearly offering to guide the writer around your own town. Develop these points and make your disagreement with the article more explicit.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The letter has a recognisable progression from your response to the article, to differences in your town, and then to an invitation and closing. Paragraphing helps separate these functions, and links such as “Moreover” and “Because of the reasons discussed above” make the relationships between ideas understandable. Some connections are less clear or mechanical, however. “Anyways” shifts the tone abruptly, while “By seeing both” and “what we are lagging behind in” leave the purpose of the proposed visit somewhat vague. The opening also refers to “unclear information” without clearly stating your overall position. Use more precise transitions and make the relationship between your town’s problems and your disagreement with the article explicit.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use enough vocabulary to communicate the main points, including “professional doctors,” “neighboring town,” and “side-by-side visit.” There are also attempts at more expressive phrasing, such as “a side-by-side visit will make our gaps impossible to ignore,” although “gaps” is not very precise in this context. Several word-choice, collocation, and spelling problems reduce naturalness: “equal number of schools” needs an article, “greenlands” is not the usual term for public green areas, and “excape” and “oher” are misspelled. “Unclear information” does not accurately express that you disagree with the article. Build precision by choosing conventional expressions such as “green spaces” and “I do not entirely agree with the article’s claim.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and more complex sentences, including a relative clause in “greenlands, where people can walk” and a reason clause beginning “Because of the reasons discussed above.” The main message remains understandable, but some errors in verb forms, agreement, and sentence construction are noticeable. For example, “my town does not has a bank” should use the base form after “does not,” and “Each of them have” has a subject–verb agreement problem. In “the hospital in my town, does not has,” the comma is unnecessary and the verb form is again incorrect. Practise these patterns and check punctuation, while continuing to use varied sentence structures.
