Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I hope this email finds you well. I am writing to formally inform you regarding the city centers look and I am not totally agree with your point.

Since I was in college, I am found of your articles and variety in writing skills. Recently, I read your article in newspaper about a town's centers in Canada. I really love the point you mentioned in your second chapter regarding the cleanliness in the Canada.

Here I would love to explain you how my city center is different from others. First of all, it is equip with modern equipment. Such as, escalators, a lift, and a high speed internet.

I would like to invite you for a guided tour of our city center to look around and observe the difference between the other centers.

I am looking for your positive response and waiting to provide you a guided tour of the place.

Thank you,

Kevin Peter

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The letter addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly state your disagreement with the article, provide specific (though brief) examples of how your town differs, and extend an invitation for a tour. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, describing your town as having 'modern equipment' like 'a lift' is a bit vague and does not fully capture the unique character of a town centre. To reach a higher band, you should expand on these points with more descriptive detail to better persuade the reader of your position.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter follows a logical structure with a clear opening and closing. Paragraphing is used to separate the different points of the task, which helps the reader follow your argument. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical. Phrases like 'First of all' are used, but the transition between the introduction and the body paragraphs could be smoother. Additionally, some sentences feel slightly disconnected, such as the sudden shift to the invitation. Improving the flow between sentences using a wider variety of linking words would enhance the overall coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to communicate your message clearly. You use some appropriate phrases like 'formally inform' and 'guided tour'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'I am found of' (should be 'fond of') and 'city centers look' (should be 'the look of city centers'). The range of vocabulary is somewhat limited and relies on basic descriptors. To improve, try to incorporate more precise adjectives and nouns to describe your town and your opinions, rather than relying on general terms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader, such as 'I am not totally agree' (should be 'I do not totally agree') and 'it is equip with' (should be 'it is equipped with'). There are also issues with articles, such as 'in the Canada' (should be 'in Canada'). While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your meaning, they indicate a need for more careful proofreading and a better grasp of verb forms and article usage.
