Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir,
I hope this letter finds you well. Today I am writing this letter regarding the article that you publish in "National Time" newspaper on Monday. The article depicts that the town and centres are look very similar in India. However, in my opinion I think every city town has their different architecture they does not look same.
Commencing with the agree points, as in the every metropolitan area city centres demonstrate their culture due to this they looks similar. Moving further, but if I talk about my shopping centre it is completely different in comparison to others. Our city mall shops and appearance is looking like the older architecture which represent and preserve the cultures.
Turning towards the guided tour, it is humble request to journalist to have a guided tour of our city. As in the starting of next month the weekly fair is going to start. I think that will be the best time to have a guided tour. I am confident about that you will see the differences in our city shopping centre as compare to other.
Address- 29th avenue, 158 street Jalandhar India.
Thank you for considering the application.
Yours truly,
Amrit

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
You have addressed all three bullet points required by the task. You clearly state your position regarding the newspaper article, describe the unique features of your town, and extend an invitation for a guided tour. However, the development of your ideas is somewhat limited. For example, while you mention that your town centre preserves older architecture, you could have provided more specific details about what makes it unique to fully satisfy the requirements of a Band 7 response. The tone is generally appropriate for a letter to an editor, although the inclusion of a physical address at the end is unnecessary as per the instructions.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organized into paragraphs, each focusing on one of the required points. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Commencing with', 'Moving further', and 'Turning towards' to signal transitions. However, some of these transitions feel a bit mechanical or slightly unnatural in context. Additionally, the referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the second paragraph where the connection between the metropolitan area and the similarity of city centres could be more smoothly articulated. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear, but the use of cohesive devices could be more varied and natural.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
Your vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing you to communicate your ideas clearly. You use some topic-specific vocabulary like 'architecture', 'metropolitan area', and 'preserve'. However, there are instances of awkward phrasing and word choice, such as 'the article depicts that the town and centres are look very similar' and 'as in the every metropolitan area'. To reach a higher band, you should aim for more precise collocations and avoid repetitive or slightly incorrect phrasing. The range is sufficient to convey your meaning, but lacks the flexibility and sophistication required for a higher score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('they does not look same', 'they looks similar') and incorrect verb forms ('article that you publish'). While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your message, they are noticeable and occur frequently enough to impact the overall fluency. To improve, focus on mastering basic subject-verb agreement and ensuring correct tense usage, particularly when referring to past events or general truths.
