Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear sir or madam,

I hope all is well.

My name is Shivam, and thank you for representing an article about the town centers of my country in your news paper.

The purpose of writing this letter to you is the kind of information provided in newspaper, I as a civilian of the country could not get agree on it at all.

Initially, when I read the article, I was okay with information provided. However, when I came to the middle part of an article, I got shocked with the information. The article was saying the town centers in the country look similar to each other.

There are many town centers in the nation which are well constructed, very well planned, and also cleaned. They also represent the story behind history how they were built, and how it reformed. For example, "Jaipur" which we called as a pink city, also "Chandigadh" one of the most planned city in India. These cities are different from each other, so are the others.

As a citizen of the country, I would insist you to come to my hometown, so that way I would may get an opportunity to offer you a city tour of my hometown. Trust me, you will feel the difference.

I am requesting you to change the information in your article if possible, and I would urge you to have trustable information before you advertise in the newspaper.

I look forward to the changes, and please do not hesitate to contact shall you need any information.

Thank you, and have a pleasant day.

Sincerely,

Shivam

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed all three bullet points of the task. You clearly state your disagreement with the article, provide examples of unique town centers like Jaipur and Chandigarh, and extend an invitation for a tour. However, the tone is occasionally aggressive rather than professional (e.g., 'I got shocked' and 'urge you to have trustable information'). In a formal letter to an editor, it is important to maintain a polite, persuasive tone. While the ideas are relevant, they could be developed with more nuance to better reflect the 'letter to the editor' genre. Overall, the task is fulfilled, but the tone needs adjustment for a higher band.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter follows a logical structure with clear paragraphing. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Initially', 'However', and 'For example' to link your ideas. However, some transitions are mechanical or slightly awkward, such as 'The purpose of writing this letter to you is the kind of information provided'. The referencing is sometimes unclear, and the flow between sentences could be smoother. To improve, focus on using a wider variety of cohesive devices and ensuring that the relationship between sentences is more explicit and natural.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You have an adequate range of vocabulary to convey your message, but it is somewhat limited and occasionally imprecise. Phrases like 'could not get agree on it' are non-standard, and 'cleaned' is not the best word to describe a city (better: 'well-maintained'). You attempt to use some topic-specific vocabulary, but there is a lack of sophisticated or less common lexical items. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise collocations and avoiding repetitive phrasing. Your word choice is sufficient for the task but lacks the flexibility required for higher scores.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as 'thank you for representing an article' (should be 'reporting' or 'publishing'), 'I as a civilian of the country could not get agree' (should be 'I cannot agree'), and 'shall you need' (should be 'should you need'). While these errors do not impede communication, they are persistent. To improve, pay closer attention to verb patterns, preposition usage, and subject-verb agreement. Increasing the variety of error-free complex sentences will help improve your score in this criterion.
