Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir,

I am writing to you regarding your article which I read in a newspaper about the town centres. You said that all town centres are similar to one another.

I agree to your some points, but not all. Parks are the only facility, which is available in every town centre. In our town centre, we have other amenities as well, first, is a supermarket where you can buy all the things that you require for daily living. Second, is a government hospital, which have really qualified doctors and they provide good services to the public.

Furthermore, there is an educational institute here, inaugurated by the council minister in 2019, and they provide quality education to the students, so students do not have to travel.

I want you to come to our town centre and I will give you a complete tour of the centre.

Thank you for your time and waiting for your response.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly state your partial agreement, provide specific examples of your town's unique amenities, and extend an invitation for a tour. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, while you mention a hospital and an educational institute, you could have explained more about their unique architectural or cultural significance to better contrast them with the 'similar' town centres mentioned in the article. The tone is appropriate for a letter to an editor, and the purpose is clear throughout the response.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your argument. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'First', and 'Second' to link your ideas. However, the transition between the introduction and the body paragraphs is slightly abrupt. Some of the sentence structures are a bit repetitive, and the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words or phrases to connect your thoughts more fluidly. Overall, the message is easy to follow, and the paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different requirements of the task.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You use a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your meaning clearly. Words like 'amenities', 'inaugurated', and 'qualified' are used correctly and add a level of formality suitable for this task. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'I agree to your some points' (should be 'I agree with some of your points') and 'facility, which is available' (where 'facility' is used in a slightly unnatural way). Expanding your vocabulary to include more precise collocations would help elevate your score in this criterion.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'which have really qualified doctors' (should be 'which has') and 'waiting for your response' (which lacks a subject, e.g., 'I am waiting'). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are some unnecessary commas, such as after 'facility' and 'first'. Despite these errors, they do not impede communication, and you show a reasonable attempt at using complex structures like relative clauses.
