Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir,
I hope this message finds you well,
I am writing to express my dissatisfaction with reference to the article I read in the Times of Indi newspaper in which you have mentioned that town centres across India appear similar to each other.
While I agree with some aspects of the article particularly about the services it offers to the public. The community centre has gone a majore refurnishment in the past 2 months and it has added several new services like new meeting rooms, gym facility, a cafeteria and counselling services for students and professionals. Also, we have increased the timings for the vistors who wants to that visit after the office hours can still visit. Furthermore, We have newly opened an visitor information centre on the main floor of the building incase if anyone has any questions.
Moreover, our town centre in the city is very different than others in different city, both in terms of infrastructure as well as the services we offer. We make sure that all the visitors and the nearby residents can access the services without much hazzle to them. Also, for the people's convinience we have wheelchair facilites for baby boomers.
In fact, I would like to invite you to our community centre in Don Mills Community Centre, Toronto so that we can give you a guided tour of it and show you around the different services we offer to serve the community.
Yours faithfully,
Sankalp Diwate.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
You have addressed all three bullet points of the task. You acknowledge the article, explain how your town centre is unique, and offer a tour. However, the development of your ideas is slightly inconsistent. You mention the 'Times of India' but then refer to a location in Toronto, which creates a confusing contradiction regarding the context of your letter. Additionally, while you describe the community centre well, you could have focused more on the 'town centre' as a whole to better address the prompt's premise. The tone is generally appropriate for a letter to an editor, though the focus on specific building facilities slightly narrows the scope of the argument.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each serving a specific purpose. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Furthermore', and 'In fact' to link your ideas. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical, and there are instances where the flow is interrupted by grammatical errors or awkward phrasing, such as the sentence starting with 'Also, we have increased the timings...'. The referencing is occasionally unclear, particularly when shifting between the general topic of town centres and the specific example of the Don Mills Community Centre. Improving the variety of linking words would help the text flow more naturally.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'dissatisfaction', 'infrastructure', and 'counselling services'. However, there are several spelling errors ('majore', 'refurnishment', 'vistors', 'hazzle', 'convinience') and some awkward collocations, such as 'gone a majore refurnishment' instead of 'undergone a major refurbishment'. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning, these errors and the limited use of more sophisticated or precise academic vocabulary prevent a higher score. Focusing on accurate spelling and more natural word combinations will significantly improve your lexical range.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is good. However, there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede readability. For example, 'the vistors who wants to that visit' is grammatically incorrect and confusing. You also have issues with sentence fragments and punctuation, such as the comma splice in the first paragraph and the awkward phrasing in 'incase if anyone has any questions'. While the meaning is generally clear, the frequency of these errors suggests a need for more careful proofreading and a better grasp of complex sentence construction to reach a higher band.
