IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You have just read an article in a national newspaper which claims that town centres in your country all look very similar to each other. You don't fully agree with this opinion.

Write a letter to the editor of the newspaper. In your letter

• say which points in the article you agree with
• explain ways in which your town centre is different from most other town centres
• offer to give a guided tour of your town to the writer of the article

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Dear Sir or Madam,

I recently read your article claiming that town centres across the country all look very similar. While I agree with some of your observations, I believe that the article overlooks the unique character that many towns still possess.

I agree that many town centres now have the same chain supermarkets, restaurants, and clothing stores. As a result, they can appear similar at first glance, especially in larger cities where commercial development has followed the same pattern.

However, my town centre is quite different in several ways. It has a historic market square that has been in use for many years, several locally owned shops, and several buildings with distinctive architecture. In addition, the town regularly hosts cultural festivals, farmers' markets, and community events that reflect our local traditions. These features give the area a unique atmosphere that cannot be found in most other towns.

If you are interested, I would be delighted to give you a guided tour of our town centre during your next visit. I am confident that seeing it in person would provide a more balanced perspective and might even inspire a follow-up article highlighting the diversity that still exists among town centres.
