Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses all three bullet points of the prompt: it mentions the article, explains why the town centre is unique, and offers a guided tour. However, the development of ideas is quite limited. The explanation of why the town is different is vague, relying on general statements about 'culture' and 'services' without providing concrete examples or specific details that would make the argument persuasive. The tone is appropriate for a letter to an editor, but the lack of depth in the arguments prevents a higher score. To improve, you should provide specific examples of what makes your town centre unique, such as historical architecture, local markets, or specific community events.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter is organized into a basic structure with an opening, body, and closing. However, the progression of ideas is somewhat mechanical. There is a lack of cohesive devices to link sentences and ideas smoothly; for instance, the transition between the disagreement with the article and the offer for a tour is abrupt. Paragraphing is also insufficient, as the entire body of the letter is compressed into one block. Using linking words like 'furthermore,' 'consequently,' or 'in contrast' would help improve the flow and logical connection between your points.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is quite limited and repetitive. You frequently use basic words like 'town centre,' 'look,' and 'different.' There are also several spelling errors, such as 'artical' instead of 'article,' 'writen' instead of 'written,' and 'refelect' instead of 'reflect.' These errors, while not completely impeding communication, are noticeable and detract from the quality of the writing. To reach a higher band, you should aim to use a wider range of vocabulary, including synonyms and more precise adjectives to describe the town's features, and pay closer attention to spelling accuracy.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response contains frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'town centres... looks the same,' 'town center are build') and verb forms (e.g., 'all of them provides'). Sentence structures are predominantly simple, and there are errors in punctuation and capitalization, such as the lowercase 'i' and the incorrect use of commas. While the meaning is generally clear, the high frequency of basic grammatical errors limits the score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and consistent verb tense usage will significantly improve the clarity and accuracy of your writing.
