Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Mr Jackson,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to express my disappointment on your article which claim that my town centres is more similar to other centres across the world. Therefore, I disagree with certain information.

There are certain points in you article which are relevant. For instance, my town is know for tourist attractions, authentic cuisines and best public facilities like advanced transportation system, better educational academy, standard hospitals and more. Moreover, in my city, big shopping malls and centres catch the attention of visitors and one-spot destination for shopping, entertainment and food-courts.

However, there are various types of historical shops and religious places, which are quite unique and captivating as compare to other town centres. Moreover, all sort of cultural cuisines are easy to witness on the street of my city. These all the things make it different over other town.

It would be appreciated if you could arrange in-person meeting in my tow in order to get clear idea about your mistake. Additionally, wrong information in your article hurts the emotions of local people of my town, therefore, send apology letter to local community. Also, edit the incorrect details in your article soon for providing accurate information to visitors of my town.

I hope you consider my concern and do something effective in this matter. Please let me know if you need any help.

Yours faithfully,

Twinkle

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly stated your disagreement with the article, provided specific examples of what makes your town unique (historical shops, religious sites, and local cuisine), and extended an invitation for a tour. However, the tone of the letter is somewhat aggressive and inappropriate for a letter to an editor, particularly the demands for an apology and the claim that the article 'hurts the emotions of local people.' A more polite, persuasive tone would be more effective for this task. The ideas are relevant, but the development is slightly hindered by the overly confrontational approach.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, each serving a clear purpose. You use some cohesive devices such as 'For instance,' 'Moreover,' and 'However' to link ideas. However, the flow is occasionally disrupted by awkward phrasing, such as 'These all the things make it different over other town.' The transition between the disagreement and the invitation is a bit abrupt. While the paragraphing is sufficient, the use of cohesive devices is sometimes mechanical rather than natural. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring smoother transitions between sentences would enhance the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You have an adequate range of vocabulary to convey your message, using terms like 'tourist attractions,' 'authentic cuisines,' and 'captivating.' However, there are several instances of word-choice errors and awkward collocations, such as 'my town centres is more similar' (should be 'town centre is similar') and 'one-spot destination.' Additionally, the phrase 'all sort of cultural cuisines are easy to witness' is unnatural; 'witness' is not the correct verb here. While your vocabulary is sufficient to communicate your points, it lacks the precision and flexibility required for a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('my town centres is'), article usage ('on your article'), and prepositional errors ('as compare to' instead of 'compared to'). There are also issues with pluralization and word order, such as 'my tow' (typo) and 'for providing accurate information.' While these errors do not completely impede communication, they occur frequently enough to distract the reader and indicate a lack of control over complex structures.
