Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I just read your artIcle on the town centres, and how all the town centres are some in the country. It was really a proud moment for my city to get featured in your newspaper.

The article was very informative and in real depth. It can be seen that you must have visited many town centres before writing. I really appreciate your time and critical thinking for the article.

However, I want to correct you about my city’s town centres. Unlike others, it is not over crowded, and neither small. Also I think our city centres have some great facilities like free wifi and designed it a way that any disable person can access it.

I would also love if you come and see the city centre of my city yourself. I am highly confident, once you came here, your thoughts will change. And you will be able to judge it more precisely. I would love to company you in your visit.

Yours faithfully,

Deepak Kumar

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all three bullet points required by the task. You successfully identify points of agreement, explain the unique features of your town, and extend an invitation for a tour. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, while you mention 'free wifi' and 'accessible design', these points could be expanded with more detail to fully satisfy the 'well-developed' criteria of higher bands. The tone is appropriate for a letter to an editor, and your position is clear throughout the text.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your argument. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'However', 'Also', and 'Once you came here' to link ideas. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the connection between sentences could be more sophisticated. For example, the transition between the second and third paragraphs could be improved to better signal the shift from agreement to disagreement. Overall, the paragraphing is appropriate and contributes to the clarity of the message.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using words like 'informative', 'critical thinking', and 'precisely'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'all the town centres are some in the country' (which is unclear) and 'I would love to company you' (should be 'accompany'). These errors do not impede communication, but they prevent the response from reaching a higher band. To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and avoiding repetitive phrasing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'designed it a way that any disable person can access it' (should be 'designed in a way that any disabled person can access it') and 'once you came here' (should be 'once you come here'). While these errors are noticeable, they rarely impede the reader's understanding. To reach a higher band, you should aim for more consistent control over verb tenses and ensure that complex sentence structures are constructed accurately.
