Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to you to inform regarding the article in your newspaper which mentions how all the town centres in the country look similar to each other.
With the recent modernisation and developments, there are some similarities in the town halls, which have stores, offices and malls of the same or similar brands.
However, our town centre's architecture is distinct as it is based on our historic architecture. In which stories of warriors and town history are engraved and the effort is made to keep the authenticity the same by having strict regulations regarding the leasing of the space in the town centre. Also, we have a weekly flea market at the town centre where all the locals display their organic products, followed by a musical evening.
It would be my pleasure to host and give a tour to you and your team who worked on this article about our town.
Kind Regards
Urvi

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The letter covers all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly identify the points of agreement regarding modern developments, explain the unique architectural and cultural features of your town, and extend a polite invitation for a tour. The tone is appropriate for a letter to an editor. To reach a higher band, ensure that your explanation of the town's uniqueness is more fully developed; for instance, you could elaborate on how the 'warrior stories' are depicted or why the leasing regulations are effective, rather than just mentioning them. Overall, the response is well-focused and fulfills the task requirements effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. You use some cohesive devices such as 'However', 'Also', and 'In which', though the use of 'In which' is grammatically awkward and disrupts the flow. To improve, try to use a wider variety of linking words and ensure that your referencing between sentences is smoother. The paragraphing is appropriate and contributes to the overall clarity of the message.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your ideas clearly. Phrases like 'modernisation and developments', 'distinct', and 'authenticity' are used appropriately. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'inform regarding' (should be 'inform you about') and 'keep the authenticity the same' (which is slightly unnatural). To achieve a higher score, try to incorporate more precise collocations and less common lexical items. For example, instead of 'keep the authenticity the same', you could use 'preserve the town's unique character'. Your vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks the sophistication required for higher bands.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While many sentences are clear, there are some grammatical errors that slightly impede the flow. For example, 'In which stories of warriors... are engraved' is a sentence fragment, and 'the effort is made' is slightly awkward. There are also minor issues with article usage and prepositional phrases. To improve, focus on ensuring that your complex sentences are complete and grammatically sound. Despite these errors, the meaning is always clear, and the grammar does not prevent the reader from understanding your points.
