Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Editor Sir or Madam,

I, Harsh Patel, and I am residing in Surat, Gujarat. I just read an article in a national newspaper in which you claimed that most of the town centres in our country look similar to each other. In my opinion, I do not fully agree with this claim.

At some extent, you are right that in our country most of the city centres are the same in design, such as the main market of the city is located in the centre of the town. But let me tell you how my city is different from others. In Surat, the main market is not located in or beside the centre, but it is situated in northern east side of the city, which is quite surprising and unique. In Surat city centre, you will see mostly government offices and services.

If you ever plan to visit Surat, please contact me at my number. I have attached my visiting card to this letter. I am fully available to show you a city tour with a proper guide and history. I guess it will help you to understand some uniqueness of Surat city centre.

Yours sincerely,

Harsh Patel

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have addressed all three bullet points of the task effectively. You clearly stated your disagreement with the article, provided a specific example of how Surat differs from other town centres, and extended an invitation for a tour. The tone is appropriate for a letter to an editor. To improve, you could expand slightly more on the 'uniqueness' of your town centre beyond just the location of the market, perhaps by mentioning cultural or architectural features, to fully develop your ideas and reach a higher band.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is logically organised with a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different requirements of the prompt. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'At some extent' (though this is a collocation error) and 'If you ever plan to visit'. However, the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words to connect your ideas more fluidly. For instance, the transition between the agreement and the disagreement could be smoother.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

Your vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to convey your message clearly. You use some relevant terms like 'residing', 'unique', and 'uniqueness'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'At some extent' (should be 'To some extent') and 'northern east side' (should be 'northeastern'). To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more sophisticated vocabulary related to urban planning or descriptive adjectives to make your argument more compelling.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical slips, such as 'I, Harsh Patel, and I am residing' (the 'and' is redundant) and 'show you a city tour' (should be 'give you a tour'). Punctuation is generally correct, but there are minor errors in phrasing. To improve, focus on ensuring subject-verb agreement and refining your use of prepositions. The majority of your sentences are understandable, but more error-free complex structures are needed for a higher score.
