Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir,

I am writing to inform you about the appearance of my town centres. By reading an article in a national newspaper, I came to know that town centres in my nation have the same look. I am not totally in favour of the statement.

It has been written that all facilities are available in town centres, such as educational organizations, playgrounds, and swimming pools, for the enjoyment of children, which is true information that is published in an article. Furthermore, residents in my country have big buildings for living .

In terms of difference, people prefer to paint their houses with different colours that are not similar to other buildings. Designs of living places are also separate and are selected from online platforms or AI tools. I would like to give a suggestion to the writer to visit our town to get more knowledge about it, which will be conducive to writing an accurate article.

Expecting your cooperation in with regards.

Your Faithfully,

David

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The letter addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly state your disagreement with the article, provide specific (though somewhat simplistic) reasons why your town is unique, and offer a guided tour. However, the development of ideas is limited. For example, the explanation regarding 'different colours' and 'online platforms' for house design is quite superficial and does not fully capture the essence of a town's character. To reach a higher band, you should expand on your points with more depth and detail, ensuring the tone remains appropriate for a letter to an editor.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your argument. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore' and 'In terms of', which function well to connect ideas. However, the transition between the introduction and the body paragraphs is slightly abrupt. Additionally, the closing sentence 'Expecting your cooperation in with regards' is grammatically awkward and does not flow naturally from the previous paragraph. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear, unified focus would enhance the overall flow of the letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to communicate your message clearly. You use some relevant terms like 'conducive' and 'cooperation'. However, there are instances of unnatural phrasing, such as 'appearance of my town centres' and 'big buildings for living'. These choices are somewhat basic and lack the precision expected at higher levels. To improve, focus on using more sophisticated collocations and idiomatic expressions that are appropriate for a formal letter to a newspaper editor, rather than relying on simple descriptive adjectives.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors that detract from the quality of the writing. For instance, 'I am writing to inform you about the appearance of my town centres' (plural 'centres' is unnecessary here), and 'Expecting your cooperation in with regards' contains a redundant preposition. There are also minor issues with article usage and word order. To improve, focus on proofreading for small errors in prepositions and sentence endings, and try to incorporate a wider variety of complex sentence forms with greater accuracy.
