Student answer (Band 5.5)

dear sir ;

I have read your recent article claiming that all town centres in our county looks very similar to each other i agree with some points in your articles ,such as the fact that many town centres have the same chain stores and restaurants.This does make them feel alike at first glance .

However ,I do not fully agree with your general opinion. My town centre lahore ,is very different from other. unlike modern shoooing areas,our centre is built around historical sites like Badshahi mosque and lahore fort .we also have traditional maekets such as anarkali bazar, where you can find local handicraft, clothing , and street foods that you will not find anywhere else The culture here is also unique,with festivals and busy food streets that give the area its own character .

Tpo show you these differences, I would like to offer you a guided tour of Lahore I am sure it will change your view

Yours faithfully,

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly stated your agreement with the article regarding chain stores, provided specific examples of how Lahore differs from other towns through its historical sites and markets, and extended a polite invitation for a tour. The tone is appropriate for a letter to an editor. To improve, ensure that your position is developed with slightly more depth; for example, you could elaborate on why the unique cultural festivals make the town centre distinct from the 'standardised' centres mentioned in the article. Overall, the response is well-focused and meets the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The letter is logically organised into clear paragraphs, with each paragraph focusing on a specific requirement of the prompt. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'However' and 'For example' (implied), to transition between ideas. However, the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that punctuation does not interfere with the structure. For instance, the transition between the agreement and the disagreement could be smoother. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the letter follows a standard formal structure, which helps the reader follow your argument easily.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, using topic-specific terms like 'historical sites', 'handicraft', and 'character'. There are some spelling errors, such as 'shoooing' instead of 'shopping' and 'maekets' instead of 'markets', which are minor but noticeable. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more sophisticated collocations and ensure accuracy in spelling. While your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the precision and variety required for a higher score. Focusing on proofreading for small slips will help improve your overall lexical accuracy.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'all town centres... looks' (subject-verb agreement) and 'my town centre lahore ,is' (punctuation and capitalisation). Additionally, there are issues with sentence boundary punctuation, such as missing spaces after commas and periods. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and consistent capitalisation of proper nouns. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Increasing your control over complex sentence structures will also enhance your grammatical range.
