You have just read an article in a national newspaper which claims that town centres in your country all look very similar to each other. You don't fully agree with this opinion.
Write a letter to the editor of the newspaper. In your letter
- say which points in the article you agree with
- explain ways in which your town centre is different from most other town centres
- offer to give a guided tour of your town to the writer of the article
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir,
My name is Jasharan Singh. I am writing this letter to inform you about your article mentioned in local newspaper about the topic of town centres and disagree with some points of that.
Moreover, in your article you say that there are some points and with that I am completely agree because in that you say all town centres are similar because they have same brand stores and resturants like Nike, Adidas, Macdonalds and Starbucks.
Apart from that, I think some things that make one shopping centre different from others. If we look at my city's city centre, I think its very unique and different from other states and cities centres as In my city's shopping centre all stores are established in old building which are fully renovated from inside and there are some old and cultural stores which provide traditional dresses and food items that represent specific culture and that is not available in any other town centre. Furthermore, if you ever visit my town, I would like to give you one guided tour of my city centre and help you gain some practical knowledge for your upcoming article. I hope to hear a favourable and prompt revert. Finally
Yours faithfully,
Jasharan Singh

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
You have addressed all three bullet points of the task: you identified points of agreement, explained how your town is unique, and offered a guided tour. Your position is clear throughout the letter. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For example, while you mention that stores are in 'old buildings,' you could have provided more descriptive detail about the atmosphere or specific architectural features to better support your argument. The letter follows the required format, and the tone is generally appropriate for a letter to an editor, although it could be slightly more formal in places.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your argument. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Moreover,' 'Apart from that,' and 'Furthermore' to link your ideas. However, some of these transitions feel a bit mechanical or repetitive. Additionally, the final sentence 'Finally' is left hanging without a concluding thought, which disrupts the flow. To improve, ensure that each paragraph has a clear topic sentence and that your concluding remarks are integrated into a full sentence rather than standing alone as a single word.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your meaning clearly. You use some topic-specific terms like 'renovated,' 'traditional,' and 'cultural.' However, there are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'revert' (which is often misused in Indian English to mean 'reply') and 'give you one guided tour' (where 'a' would be more natural). To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise adjectives and avoid repetitive phrasing like 'shopping centre' and 'town centre' by using synonyms or referring back to them more fluidly.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'I am completely agree' (should be 'I completely agree') and 'in that you say' (which is slightly awkward). There are also issues with article usage, such as 'in old building' (should be 'in old buildings'). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles will significantly improve your accuracy.
