Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to express my dissatisfaction about the article in a national newspaper depicts that all town centres are quite same to each other.

As my town has several amenities such as well- maintained public parks, hospital, school and local transit, which seals the attention of the society. It is properly explained in your article and I completely agree with you.

Unlike other town centres, my town centre is not attached with national highway, which creates inconvenience for the community. Although the town is well popular due to their local market and many common band shops, parking is the big issue, which makes it diverse from other towns as they have huge parking slots, even underground ones.

If you would like to rewrite in brief about my town again, I can give you a guided tour at your convenience, which will help you to present your the article in a good way.

I look forward to your prompt response and I hope this information will assist you to correct the article.

Kind regards,

Harjit Rai

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The letter covers all three bullet points required by the prompt. You successfully identify points of agreement, explain the unique aspects of your town, and extend an invitation for a tour. However, the development of ideas is somewhat inconsistent. For instance, the explanation of why your town is different is slightly confusing; you mention the lack of a highway as a negative point, but the prompt asks for ways your town is different, which should ideally highlight its unique character. Additionally, the tone is occasionally inconsistent, such as when you suggest the editor should 'rewrite' the article, which sounds slightly demanding rather than professional. Overall, the task is fulfilled, but the depth of argument could be improved.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each addressing a specific part of the prompt. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Although', 'Unlike', and 'If', which help the flow of information. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the second paragraph where 'It is properly explained' is ambiguous regarding what 'it' refers to. The progression of ideas is generally easy to follow, but the connection between the lack of a highway and the uniqueness of the town could be more explicitly linked to ensure a smoother logical flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'amenities', 'inconvenience', and 'at your convenience'. However, there are several instances of awkward word choice and collocation errors, such as 'depicts that all town centres are quite same' (should be 'are quite similar') and 'common band shops' (likely meant 'chain stores'). These errors do not impede communication, but they do limit the precision of your writing. To reach a higher band, focus on using more natural collocations and avoiding repetitive phrasing like 'my town' and 'town centre' in close proximity.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the conditional sentence in the fourth paragraph. However, there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text. Examples include 'the article in a national newspaper depicts' (should be 'the article... which depicts'), 'well popular' (should be 'very popular'), and 'present your the article' (a clear slip). While these errors are noticeable, they rarely prevent the reader from understanding your intended meaning. To improve, pay closer attention to article usage (a/the) and ensure that complex sentence structures are grammatically sound.
