IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You have just read an article in a national newspaper which claims that town centres in your country all look very similar to each other. You don't fully agree with this opinion.

Write a letter to the editor of the newspaper. In your letter

• say which points in the article you agree with
• explain ways in which your town centre is different from most other town centres
• offer to give a guided tour of your town to the writer of the article

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing in response to the recent article claiming that town centres across the country have become almost indistinguishable from one another. Although I agree that the growing presence of large chain stores has made many town centres look similar, I believe this view overlooks the distinctive character of individual communities.

Admittedly, most town centres now contain the same familiar brands, including clothing retailers, coffee shops and fast-food outlets. This trend has undoubtedly made shopping areas more uniform and, in some cases, has led to the decline of independent businesses. However, my town centre retains a strong local identity. It has a beautifully preserved historic quarter, a traditional market and numerous family-run cafés and shops. In addition, the central square hosts local festivals and cultural events throughout the year, giving the area an atmosphere that is quite different from that of a typical commercial centre.

I would be delighted to offer the writer a guided tour of my town. I could show them the historic buildings, introduce them to some local shopkeepers and take them to the market and central square. I am confident that seeing these places first-hand would demonstrate that, despite certain similarities, town centres can still retain their own unique character.
