Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir,

I am writing in response to recent article published a few days ago, which claims that town centres in my country match’s with each other. I would like to share my viewpoint to address this concern.

Firstly, I largely agree with your opinion that many building like shopping malls, museums, restaurants and monuments looks similar in the structure due to the modern architectural techniques based on the geographical location to support environmental conditions. For instance, in Canada majority of the buildings looks exactly similar with each because these were build according to the climatical conditions.

However, they might look similar with exterior design but interior design is definitely does not match with each other, every place has its own unique style. Moreover, many places are the well know monuments, where large number of public visit every year.

Finally, I would be privilege to provide guided tour of my town during you are next visit and explain why there are differences found from one building to another.

Hoping to hear from you.

Yours faithfully,

Anjali

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have addressed all three bullet points required by the task. You clearly stated your agreement with the article, explained how your town differs, and extended an invitation for a tour. However, the development of your ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, your explanation of why your town is different is quite brief and lacks specific, concrete examples of what makes it unique. To improve, you should expand on your points with more descriptive detail. Your position is clear throughout, and the tone is appropriate for a letter to an editor.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter follows a logical structure, with clear paragraphing for each point requested. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'However', and 'Moreover' to link your ideas. However, the flow is occasionally hindered by awkward phrasing and minor errors in referencing. For example, the transition between the agreement and the counter-argument could be smoother. The use of cohesive devices is generally functional, but at times feels a bit mechanical. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that sentences connect more naturally would help elevate your score in this criterion.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You have an adequate range of vocabulary to convey your message, but there are several instances of imprecise word choice and collocation errors. For example, you use 'match’s with each other' instead of 'resemble one another', and 'climatical conditions' instead of 'climatic conditions'. Additionally, 'I would be privilege' should be 'I would be privileged'. While your meaning is generally clear, these errors indicate a need for more attention to word forms and collocations. Expanding your vocabulary to include more precise, topic-specific terms would enhance the quality of your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

Your writing shows a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. Common issues include subject-verb agreement ('buildings... looks', 'majority... looks') and incorrect verb forms ('these were build'). There are also errors in preposition usage and sentence construction, such as 'during you are next visit'. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher band score. Focusing on basic subject-verb agreement and proofreading for tense consistency will significantly improve your accuracy.
