Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir,

I hope this letter finds you well. Recently, I got the chance to read an article claiming that all town centres in my country looks exactly the same. I am writing this letter to respectfully present my disagreement with some of the points made in this article.

I would like to appreciate the point made in the article regarding the local food and other entertainment activities that these town cities have to offer to tourists who come to experience a new culture from all over the world. Furthermore, the way article explains about the heritage and culture of these town centres is very fascinating for native readers.

I would like to draw your attention towards a claim made in the article that all city centres are similar in our country. I believe this is an exaggerated claim as my town centre is different from other town centres in many ways. In my town centre, we have one of the biggest theme parks. Beside theme park we also have a racing track where tourist can entertain themselves while driving racing car under supervision of expert guides.

I would like to show my willingness to offer you a guided tour of my town to the writer so he can himself experience the difference personally.

Yours truly,

Dr Zohaib.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed all three bullet points of the task effectively. You clearly stated your disagreement with the article's premise, provided specific examples of your town's unique features (the theme park and racing track), and extended an invitation for a guided tour. The tone is appropriate for a letter to an editor. To improve, ensure that your explanation of why you agree with certain points is more specific; currently, the mention of 'local food' and 'entertainment' is a bit generic. Overall, the response is well-developed and fulfills the requirements of the prompt.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore' and 'In my town centre' to transition between ideas. However, the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that the transition between the agreement section and the disagreement section is smoother. Paragraphing is used correctly to separate the different requirements of the task, which helps the reader follow your argument easily.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to communicate your ideas clearly. Phrases like 'respectfully present my disagreement' and 'draw your attention towards' are appropriate for the formal context of a letter to an editor. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'town cities' (which is redundant) and 'Beside theme park' (which should be 'Besides the theme park'). Expanding your vocabulary to include more precise adjectives and collocations would help elevate your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical slips. For example, 'all town centres... looks exactly the same' should be 'look', and 'the way article explains' is missing an article ('the way the article'). Additionally, 'tourist can entertain themselves' should be plural ('tourists'). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher band score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and article usage will lead to significant improvement.
