IELTS Writing Task 1 question
You have just read an article in a national newspaper which claims that town centres in your country all look very similar to each other. You don't fully agree with this opinion.
Write a letter to the editor of the newspaper. In your letter
- say which points in the article you agree with
- explain ways in which your town centre is different from most other town centres
- offer to give a guided tour of your town to the writer of the article
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 8.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to express my disagreement with the view expressed in your recent article claiming that town centers around the world are becoming identical. While uniform commercial chains are common today, your argument ignores the distinct historical and cultural identities that many town centers retain.
Specifically, I disagree with your assertation that local heritage has been completely replaced by modern retail architecture. My town center, for example, features carefully preserved 18th- century timber-framed buildings and a traditional cobblestone square. Instead of large shopping malls, our center is built around a historic canal network and hosts a weekly open-air market showcasing local craftsmen and producers, creating a character unique to our region.
To demonstrate how different our town center is from your generalized description, I would like to invite the write of the article for a guided tour of our area.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Your faithfully,
Afroza

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The response effectively addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly state your disagreement with the newspaper article, provide specific examples of how your town differs (mentioning the canal network and timber-framed buildings), and include the required invitation for a guided tour. The tone is appropriate for a letter to an editor, and your position is consistent throughout. The ideas are well-developed and relevant, demonstrating a clear understanding of the task requirements. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly more on the 'agreed' points to show a more nuanced perspective, but overall, the task is fully satisfied.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the different points required by the prompt. You use cohesive devices such as 'Specifically', 'Instead of', and 'To demonstrate' to guide the reader through your argument. The flow of ideas is smooth, and the progression from your disagreement to your specific evidence and final offer is logical. The use of referencing is clear, and the letter maintains a professional tone throughout, which is essential for this type of correspondence.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.5
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary, using terms like 'uniform commercial chains', 'distinct historical and cultural identities', and 'generalized description'. The language is precise and appropriate for the context. There is a minor spelling error ('assertation' instead of 'assertion') and a small typo in the sign-off ('Your' instead of 'Yours'), but these are minor slips that do not impede communication. You show an ability to use less common lexical items effectively, which contributes to the overall quality of the writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
The response displays a good variety of complex sentence structures, such as the use of 'While' clauses and participial phrases ('showcasing local craftsmen'). The majority of your sentences are error-free, and your control over punctuation is generally strong. There is a minor error in the sign-off ('Your faithfully' should be 'Yours faithfully'), but this is a common slip and does not detract from the overall grammatical competence shown. The structures used are varied and help to convey your message with clarity and sophistication.
