Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir,

I am writing in response to your article published in a national newspaper which claims that town centres in Canada look very similar. I agree with the point that similar plans are used while constructing buildings in many town center, while I do not share the view that it makes all town centres similar to each other.

I sincerely appreciate your research and acknowledge that many shopping complex are using same designs, which makes every town looks similar. Moreover, your articles stated that shoppers can't feel lost anymore which is true, since many buildings following the same plan.

However, my town is quite different from every other town. It still has ancient buildings and shops, which makes it unique. Furthermore, the town council has maintained its natural landscape without any much disturbance, so you can enjoy the nature.

I am more than happy to give you a guide tour of my town, and I can show you the antique showrooms, market and ancient monuments. Please let me know what you think, and when you want to come for a visit. I would appreciate it if you could mention our town uniqueness in your next article.

I look forward to your prompt response.

Yours truly,

Parvinderjeet

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have addressed all three bullet points of the task effectively. You clearly stated your partial agreement with the article, provided specific examples of how your town differs (mentioning ancient buildings and natural landscapes), and included a polite invitation for a guided tour. Your tone is appropriate for a letter to an editor, and your position is consistent throughout. To reach a higher band, ensure that your supporting ideas are slightly more detailed; for example, describing a specific landmark or a unique local event would have added more depth to your argument.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'However', and 'Furthermore' to transition between ideas. While the flow is generally smooth, some of the paragraph transitions feel slightly mechanical. Additionally, the referencing is occasionally repetitive, such as the frequent use of 'town' and 'town centres'. Improving the variety of your linking words and using more sophisticated referencing (e.g., 'this locality', 'the aforementioned area') would enhance the overall cohesion of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'unique', 'landscape', and 'monuments'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'many shopping complex are using same designs' (should be 'complexes are using the same designs') and 'without any much disturbance' (should be 'without much disturbance'). You also rely on some repetitive phrasing. To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and ensuring pluralization is accurate when using quantifiers like 'many'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. However, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, such as 'many town center' (should be 'town centres'), 'every town looks' (should be 'every town look'), and 'a guide tour' (should be 'a guided tour'). While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles would significantly improve your accuracy.
