Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing in response to an article which is recently published in your newspaper about town centers become increasingly similar. Although, i agree with some of the points but i am not completely agree with this article that all towns look similar.

I agree that may be they look similar because the structure of towns is similar the stores, restaurants and coffee shops. Popular brands and supermarkets can be found in every town. As a result, they some shopping centers look similar.

However, my town center is quite different from many others. There are so many historical buildings, traditional markets and shops. Also, there is so many parks that make my town peaceful and beautiful. These features gives my town a great feature that make it different from other.

If you are interested, i will give you a guide tour of my city. I will show you historical buildings, culture and traditional markets. I truly believe that it will change your perspective on this issue.

Faithfully,

Ravneet

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all three bullet points required by the task. You clearly state your partial agreement with the article, explain the unique features of your town, and extend an invitation for a tour. The ideas are relevant and the tone is appropriate for a letter to an editor. To improve, you could provide more specific examples of the 'historical buildings' or 'traditional markets' mentioned to better develop your argument and reach a higher band. The position is consistent throughout the letter.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized with clear paragraphing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt. You use some cohesive devices such as 'However', 'As a result', and 'Also' to link ideas. However, the flow is occasionally slightly mechanical. To improve, try to use a wider variety of linking words and ensure that referencing (e.g., 'these features') is used more precisely to connect sentences more fluidly.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing you to convey your message clearly. You use some topic-specific vocabulary like 'historical buildings' and 'traditional markets'. However, the range is somewhat limited and repetitive (e.g., the word 'similar' is used multiple times). To achieve a higher score, try to incorporate more varied synonyms and collocations to describe the town's atmosphere and the article's content.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'article which is recently published' (should be 'was recently published'), 'i am not completely agree' (should be 'I do not completely agree'), and 'there is so many parks' (should be 'there are so many parks'). These errors are frequent but do not impede the overall meaning of your letter. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and verb tense consistency will help improve your score.
