Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I'm writing this letter to discuss about few points that you mentioned in your newspaper regarding town centres.

I read an article in the Canada's Times newspaper which is written by you regarding similarity in all country's town centres. Somehow, I'm agree with your some points like, you said in the article that the outer structure of the all the centres are same which is bases on Canada's memorials because the design of all the town's centre repersent their town's properties, for example maple leaf.

However, I want to share some things which I believe, makes my town centre different from other town centre. First of all, Shelburne's town centre is the biggest centre of the area as compare to other town due to curling club, numerous indoor play grounds and swimming pool for kids and adults which is not available in any town's centre nearby. With that, the huge party area which is sufficient of 100 people for any kind of social event. So, the residents of closeby town usually use this centre for any party or celebration.

I do not know you ever visit Shelburne's town centre before or not but on coming weekend August 23, 2026 potato festival is coming which is going to be held on town's centre. So, if you are available on that day please visit, I will be glad to give you a tour of the centre. I think , it will provides you a lot of topics for your next article.

I look forward to hear from you soon. Let me know if you need any further information.

Yours faithfully,

Simran Gill.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have addressed all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly state your partial agreement, describe the unique features of your town centre, and extend a polite invitation for a tour. The tone is appropriate for a letter to an editor. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited by grammatical issues, and the explanation of why your town is different could be more cohesive. While you mention specific facilities like the curling club, the connection back to the newspaper article's argument about 'similarity' could be more explicitly articulated to fully satisfy the task requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter follows a logical structure with clear paragraphing. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'However', 'First of all', and 'So' to link your ideas. However, the flow is occasionally interrupted by awkward phrasing and repetitive sentence structures. Some transitions feel mechanical, and the use of referencing (e.g., 'which is not available in any town's centre nearby') is sometimes slightly unclear. To improve, try to vary your linking words and ensure that each paragraph transitions smoothly into the next to create a more natural, cohesive argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to communicate your message effectively. You use topic-specific terms like 'memorials', 'social event', and 'festival'. However, there are several instances of word-choice errors and awkward collocations, such as 'discuss about few points' (should be 'discuss a few points') and 'bases on' (should be 'based on'). Additionally, 'properties' is used incorrectly to mean 'features' or 'characteristics'. While these errors do not prevent understanding, they indicate a need for more precise vocabulary usage and better attention to common English collocations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is good. However, there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement ('all the centres are same'), article usage ('the Canada's Times'), and tense consistency ('I do not know you ever visit'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with comma placement. While the meaning remains clear, the frequency of these errors prevents the writing from reaching a higher band. Focusing on basic sentence construction and proofreading for common errors like missing articles or incorrect verb forms will significantly improve your score.
