Student answer (Band 8.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing in response to the article recently published in your newspaper claiming that town centres across the country all look very similar. Although I agree with some of the points mentioned in the article, I do not completely agree with this opinion.
I agree that many town centres have similar facilities, such as shopping malls, cafés, restaurants and large retail stores. In addition, most of them have modern buildings and busy streets, which can make them appear quite alike.
However, my town centre is different in several ways. It has a beautiful historic area with old buildings that reflect the town's history and culture. It also has a traditional farmers' market where local people sell fresh produce and handmade products. Unlike many modern town centres, my town has several small, family-owned shops, which give the area a more personal and welcoming atmosphere.
I would be delighted to give the writer of the article a guided tour of my town. I could show them the historic buildings, local market and some of the unique shops so that they could see these differences for themselves.
Thank you for considering my views. I hope you will publish a variety of opinions on this topic.
Yours faithfully,
Isha Goyal

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
You have fully addressed all three bullet points of the task. You clearly identified the points of agreement regarding modern town centre facilities, provided specific examples of how your town differs (historic architecture, farmers' market, and family-owned shops), and included a polite offer for a guided tour. The tone is consistently appropriate for a letter to an editor, and your position is clear throughout. The response is well-developed and covers all requirements of the prompt effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The letter is logically organised with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph focuses on a single aspect of the prompt, ensuring a smooth progression of ideas. You have used cohesive devices such as 'In addition', 'However', and 'Unlike' effectively to link your thoughts. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the flow of the letter is natural and easy to follow throughout.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary that is appropriate for the context. Phrases like 'reflect the town's history and culture', 'personal and welcoming atmosphere', and 'fresh produce' are used accurately. While the vocabulary is functional and clear, it could be elevated further by incorporating more sophisticated or less common collocations to reach the highest band. Nevertheless, the language is precise, and there are no errors in word choice that impede communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0
Your writing displays a high level of grammatical accuracy. You have successfully used a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the conditional 'so that they could see' and the contrastive 'Although I agree...'. Punctuation is used correctly throughout, and there are no significant errors that distract the reader. The control over verb tenses and sentence construction is consistent, reflecting a strong command of English grammar.
