Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Editor,

I hope you are well and am writing this letter to express my disagreement with the recent article which shows that all cities centers look almost similar in my country which I personally do not agree.

Although the structure of buildings in some towns can be similar because of its architectural design which has become a great attraction among the tourists. Also, the conventional design of many cozy cafes and restaurants still have same vibes.

Except this, if you see the buildings of schools and universities carefully, now its have been converted into modernization. After this, the number of museums has taken place in recent years which are not built in other towns. Lastly, some amusements places such as Island Paradise, the world of sharks and the golf courts have gained popularity among the people.

I kindly invite you to come here and allow me to give you a guided tour at your convenience.

Thank you in advance

Yours Faithfully,

Manpreet Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The letter addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly state your disagreement with the article, provide specific examples of how your town differs (museums, modern schools, and specific attractions like 'Island Paradise'), and extend an invitation for a tour. The tone is appropriate for a letter to an editor. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited; for instance, the explanation of why your town is different could be more detailed to fully convince the reader. The position is clear, but the expression of your disagreement in the opening sentence is slightly awkward, which slightly impacts the overall clarity of your stance.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your argument. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Although', 'Except this', and 'Lastly' to transition between ideas. However, some of these transitions are slightly unnatural or misused; for example, 'Except this' is not a standard way to introduce a new point in this context. Additionally, the referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the second paragraph where 'its' lacks a clear antecedent. While the overall progression is logical, the use of cohesive devices is sometimes mechanical rather than fluid.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'architectural design', 'conventional', and 'modernization'. There are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'amusements places' (should be 'amusement parks' or 'recreational areas') and 'golf courts' (should be 'golf courses'). These errors do not impede communication, but they do limit the precision of your writing. To reach a higher band, you should focus on using more natural collocations and ensuring that your vocabulary choices are contextually accurate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is good. However, there are frequent grammatical errors that affect the flow of your writing. For example, 'am writing this letter to express my disagreement... which I personally do not agree' is grammatically incomplete. You also have subject-verb agreement issues, such as 'now its have been converted' and 'the number of museums has taken place'. While these errors rarely prevent the reader from understanding your meaning, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on basic subject-verb agreement and sentence construction will significantly improve your accuracy.
