Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I hope this letter finds you well. Recently, an article published by you have caught my attention while reading the public newspaper. Nevertheless, you have mentioned that every community centres across the United States have same design and similar infra-structure. I politely oppose that claim which I am going to discuss ahead in this email.

There are few evidence that support you claim and I also agree with it, that most of the town halls across our nation have same location in their own county. Furthermore, In the City of Michigan you will find that local town centre is build with recycled material and 100 percent funded by the residents. Additionally, it has a gigantic hall where you can organise any event and it also have an electric generator as well.

I would like you send you an invitation on behalf of our city council, that you would visit our newly constructed townhall and be our guest. We are looking forward to see you soon.

Sincerely,

Harji

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all three bullet points of the task. You clearly state your partial agreement, provide a specific example of how your town centre differs (recycled materials and resident funding), and extend an invitation for a tour. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the explanation of why your town is different is brief and lacks depth. To improve, ensure that your arguments are more fully elaborated to demonstrate a more sophisticated engagement with the prompt. The tone is generally appropriate for a letter to an editor, although the structure could be more refined to better reflect a formal correspondence.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is organised into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your argument. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'Additionally', and 'Nevertheless' to link ideas. However, the use of these devices is sometimes mechanical or slightly unnatural in context. For example, 'Nevertheless' is used incorrectly at the start of the second sentence, as it does not contrast with the previous sentence. Additionally, the transition between the agreement part and the counter-argument could be smoother. Improving the variety and accuracy of your linking words will help your writing flow more naturally.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message, but there are several instances of inaccurate word choice and collocation. For example, 'public newspaper' is redundant, 'infra-structure' is misspelled, and 'community centres' is likely not the intended term for 'town centres'. You also use 'few evidence', which is grammatically incorrect as 'evidence' is uncountable. While your vocabulary is adequate for the task, you need to focus on using more precise collocations and ensuring that your word choices are contextually appropriate to reach a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. Notable errors include subject-verb agreement issues, such as 'article... have caught' and 'town centre is build'. You also have issues with articles and pluralisation, such as 'every community centres' and 'support you claim'. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to lower the score. To improve, focus on proofreading for basic subject-verb agreement and ensuring correct verb forms, especially when using passive voice.
