- say which points in the article you agree with
- explain ways in which your town centre is different from most other town centres
- offer to give a guided tour of your town to the writer of the article
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing this letter to express my disappointment about the article in which national newspaper mention that all towns centres look similar.
I thoroughly agree with the majority of the points you have made in your article. For example, I also believe that all centres should reflect the traditional and cultural aspects of the society that is living in the city and it should be easily accessible by public transportation. Recently, I reide in Edmonton and I opine that the town of this province is different from other cities in many ways. For instance, Edmonton's town centre is more crowded and lively the day, whereas Brampton and Montreal's city centres have more vibrant atmosphere at night. Moreover, Edmonton has variety of cafe in multicultures and social service for needy ones which is not common in other provinces.
I would like to invite you to take a trip to Edmonton. It would be an absolute pleasure to accompany you during your stay and give you a tour of the city. We can discuss the difference between the town centre of Edmonton and the rest of Canada's town centres.
I hope you take my suggestion into your consideration and act accordingly.
Your's Sincerely
Arpan.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response addresses all three bullet points of the task. You clearly state your agreement with the article's premise regarding cultural reflection and accessibility, explain how Edmonton differs from other cities, and extend an invitation for a tour. The tone is appropriate for a letter to an editor. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited; for instance, the comparison between Edmonton, Brampton, and Montreal is a bit confusing, as these are distinct cities rather than just town centres. To reach a higher band, ensure your arguments are more clearly articulated and logically connected to the prompt's focus on town centre aesthetics.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each serving a specific purpose. You use some cohesive devices such as 'For example', 'Moreover', and 'For instance' to link ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be smoother. The referencing is generally clear, though the transition from the general agreement to the specific comparison of cities is a bit abrupt. Overall, the structure is coherent and easy to follow, meeting the requirements for a standard formal letter.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'traditional and cultural aspects', 'accessible', and 'vibrant atmosphere'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'reide' (likely a typo for 'reside'), 'the day' (should be 'during the day'), and 'variety of cafe in multicultures' (which is grammatically awkward). While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise control over word forms and collocations to reach a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical slips, such as 'in which national newspaper mention' (should be 'in which the national newspaper mentions'), 'the town of this province' (should be 'towns in this province'), and 'Your's Sincerely' (should be 'Yours sincerely'). There are also issues with article usage and subject-verb agreement. These errors occur frequently enough to be noticeable but do not prevent the reader from understanding your message.
