Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir/ Madam

I am writing to this letter to clarify the article in a national newspaper in which your firm mentioned that town centres in our country are similar. I want to contradict this statement beacause in my opinion towns centres are different in few ways like some of the towns have monuments, heritages sites and some are famous for their food.

To further explain my statement I think many of the town centre have their own uniqueness which make people to go visit them. In my hometown the town centre have its own famous tourist destination known as Buddha stuppa and near that is museum which contains antiques so many people comes there to visit my town centre which makes it different from the rest of the country town centre

I will offer you to come and visit my town centre and show you how it is differnt from the other town centres. I urge you to print an article of each town centres in the country to make people familiar more about the areas in our country.

Your Faithfully

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The letter addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly state your disagreement with the article, provide specific examples of your town's unique features like the 'Buddha stuppa' and museum, and extend an invitation for a guided tour. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, you mention agreeing with some points in the article but do not specify which ones, which is a missed opportunity to fully develop your argument. The tone is generally appropriate for a letter to an editor, though it could be more formal in places to better suit the context.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your argument. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'To further explain' and 'In my hometown' to transition between ideas. However, the flow is occasionally mechanical, and some transitions are missing or repetitive. For example, the final paragraph starts abruptly. To improve, try using a wider variety of linking words and ensure that each paragraph has a clear topic sentence that connects back to the main purpose of the letter. The referencing is generally clear, but the overall structure could be more sophisticated.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using words like 'monuments', 'heritage', and 'uniqueness'. However, there are several instances of word-choice errors and awkward phrasing, such as 'clarify the article' (instead of 'comment on') and 'print an article of each town centres' (which is grammatically incorrect). There are also some spelling errors, such as 'beacause', 'stuppa', and 'differnt'. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise collocations and ensure your spelling is accurate, as these errors occasionally distract the reader from your message.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation that occasionally impede clarity. For example, 'I am writing to this letter' is incorrect, and there are issues with subject-verb agreement, such as 'many of the town centre have' (should be 'centres have') and 'people comes' (should be 'people come'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with the salutation and sign-off. While the meaning is generally conveyed, the frequency of these errors prevents a higher score. Focusing on basic subject-verb agreement and pluralization will significantly improve your accuracy.
