Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing this letter to bring to your attention that the topic for the town centre in our country, which was published in Friday's newspaper, is being claimed as identical, which I opine that it in incorrect. Many different corners in the town are totally different from the other centres. However, I agree that the tower in the centre is the same as that of our neighbouring town, and the design and paintings are identical.

Firstly, I think that the broad roads and the bridge, which is designed and constructed, are the main eye-catching features of our country, which boost tourism and are unique in the world. Secondly, the handicraft forms are only found in our country which is transported to different parts of the globe.

In addition to this, I can offer you a detailed guided tour of my country in different states, which can broaden your knowledge and help in a better understand it.

Hoping to see you soon, and please let me know what time and day would suit you best.

Yours sincerely,

xyz

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all three bullet points of the task. You clearly state your disagreement with the article, identify specific features of your town, and extend an invitation for a tour. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, when mentioning the 'handicraft forms', you do not explain how these contribute to the town's unique character compared to others. Additionally, there is some confusion in your writing between 'town' and 'country' (e.g., 'unique in the world' and 'tour of my country'), which makes the focus slightly inconsistent. To improve, ensure you maintain the specific context of a 'town centre' throughout the letter.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is logically organized into paragraphs, each serving a clear purpose. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'In addition to this' to guide the reader through your arguments. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the opening paragraph where the connection between the newspaper article and your opinion is slightly convoluted. Paragraphing is used appropriately, but the transition between the agreement part and the disagreement part could be smoother to enhance the overall logical progression.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'identical', 'eye-catching', and 'broaden your knowledge'. However, there are instances of awkward word choice and collocation, such as 'the topic for the town centre... is being claimed as identical' and 'handicraft forms are only found'. These phrases sound unnatural. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning, it lacks the precision and flexibility required for higher band scores. Focusing on more natural collocations and avoiding repetitive phrasing will help improve your lexical range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the relative clause in 'the bridge, which is designed and constructed'. However, there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader, such as 'which I opine that it in incorrect' (should be 'which I believe is incorrect') and 'help in a better understand it' (should be 'help in better understanding it'). While these errors do not prevent communication, they indicate a lack of control over complex structures. To reach a higher band, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of prepositions and verb forms.
