IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You have just read an article in a national newspaper which claims that town centres in your country all look very similar to each other. You don't fully agree with this opinion.

Write a letter to the editor of the newspaper. In your letter

• say which points in the article you agree with
• explain ways in which your town centre is different from most other town centres
• offer to give a guided tour of your town to the writer of the article

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing in response to the recent article in your newspaper claiming that town centres throughout the country are virtually indistinguishable. Although I agree with some of the writer’s observations, I believe the overall conclusion is overly broad.

Admittedly, modern development has created certain similarities. Like many other town centres, ours contains branches of national banks, popular coffee chains and familiar clothing retailers. The article is also correct in stating that standardised shop fronts and pedestrian areas can make commercial streets appear alike at first glance.

Nevertheless, our town centre retains a distinctive local character. It is built around a historic market square surrounded by independent bookshops, family-run restaurants and carefully preserved buildings. Furthermore, a restored railway station now serves as a community museum, while colourful murals celebrate the area’s Indigenous and immigrant heritage. A weekly farmers’ market, at which local producers sell food and handmade goods, also gives the centre a strong sense of community.

I would be delighted to offer the writer a guided tour so that they could experience these features personally. If they contact me through your newspaper, I would be pleased to arrange a convenient date.
