You have just read an article in a national newspaper which claims that town centres in your country all look very similar to each other. You don't fully agree with this opinion.

Write a letter to the editor of the newspaper. In your letter

• say which points in the article you agree with
• explain ways in which your town centre is different from most other town centres
• offer to give a guided tour of your town to the writer of the article

I am writing with reference to the recent article published in your newspaper regarding the growing uniformity among town centres across the country. While I understand the writer's perspective to a certain degree, I do not entirely share this view and would like to offer a different viewpoint based on my own local area.

To begin with, I agree with the author’s observation that many high streets have become increasingly standardized. The dominant presence of multinational retail chains, fast-food outlets, and uniform storefront designs has undoubtedly led to a loss of character in many commercial districts nationwide. In this respect, the article makes a valid and insightful point.

However, my own town centre stands as a notable exception to this trend. Unlike many typical high streets, our local council has implemented strict urban planning policies to preserve our rich architectural heritage. The town square is centered around a restored 15th-century market hall, surrounded predominantly by independent boutiques and family-owned cafes rather than corporate chains. Furthermore, our town centre regularly hosts traditional open-air markets and cultural festivals, which give it a distinct identity and vibrant community atmosphere that cannot be replicated elsewhere.

If the author of the article would be interested, I would be delighted to offer them a guided tour of our town. This would allow them to see firsthand how traditional heritage and modern commerce can coexist without sacrificing local individuality.
