Write a letter to the editor of the newspaper. In your letter
- say which points in the article you agree with
- explain ways in which your town centre is different from most other town centres
- offer to give a guided tour of your town to the writer of the article
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear sir,
I recently read an article related to the town centers in my country. I have to somewhat disagree with your idea that all the town centers shares the same looks.
Firstly, i do agree with some of your viewpoints on the infrastructure of the town centers, how some of them shares the same design and the sole reason for that is the communities living their. Some of them have the exact same communities(religious) living in the area which contributes towards the ideas behind the construction of the town centers.
However, claiming that all of them looks similar is not completely valid.
For instance, Chine center is totally distinguished from any other town center in the country, it inclusively shows the Chinese culture. Moreover, the center in my city which is populated by the Jewish community reflects a completely different outlook. Additionally, i would love to give you a guided tour for some of the town centers which will effectively show the distinguished characteristics in their design.
Yours sincerely

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have addressed all three bullet points required by the task. You clearly state your position regarding the newspaper article, provide specific examples of how your town differs from others, and include the offer for a guided tour. The ideas are relevant and the tone is appropriate for a letter to an editor. To reach a higher band, ensure your arguments are more fully developed; for instance, explaining why the 'Chinese center' or the 'Jewish community' area specifically creates a unique atmosphere would add more depth to your response. Overall, you have fulfilled the requirements of the task effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'However', and 'Moreover' to link your ideas. However, the transition between the agreement part and the disagreement part could be smoother. Additionally, the paragraphing is a bit fragmented; some sentences could be grouped more effectively to improve the flow of the argument. While the progression of ideas is generally clear, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical at times. Improving the variety of linking words would enhance the overall coherence.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'infrastructure', 'distinguished', and 'characteristics'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'shares the same looks' (should be 'look the same') and 'Chine center' (likely meant 'Chinatown'). There are also minor errors in word formation, such as 'inclusively shows' instead of 'distinctively reflects'. While these errors do not impede communication, they limit the precision of your writing. Expanding your vocabulary to include more natural collocations would help you achieve a higher score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation. For example, there are issues with subject-verb agreement ('all the town centers shares', 'all of them looks'), capitalization errors ('i' instead of 'I'), and missing articles. While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your message. To improve, focus on proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy, particularly with pluralization and verb agreement. Incorporating a wider variety of complex sentence structures with greater accuracy would also be beneficial for your development.
