Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing this to express my dissatisfaction regarding a claim in your newspaper article.

I recently read your article about the similarity between the all town centres in my country. Although, I agree that the design and layout style is almost similar in all centers, I do not fully agree with your article.

Our town centre has a massive area and it has 8 different gates to enter and exit with the huge parking lots. It connects with 3 various intersections which makes it easily accessible for the visitors. Not only that but it also contains one of the biggest multiplex theater of our city. No other centers has these type of amenities.

Additionally, I would be delighted if the writer of the article accept my invitation for a town centre tour. I would brifly guide and show personally the difference and speciality of our town centre.

Thank you for your time and concern. I hopr to hear it from you soon.

Best Regards,

Farhan Khan

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter covers all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly state your partial agreement with the article, describe specific features of your town centre, and extend a polite invitation for a tour. The tone is appropriate for a letter to an editor. However, the development of ideas could be more sophisticated. For instance, while you mention '8 different gates' and 'multiplex theater', explaining why these features make the town unique compared to others would have strengthened the argument. The response is well-focused and maintains a consistent position throughout, meeting the requirements for a Band 7.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the different points of the task. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Although', 'Additionally', and 'Not only that but', which help the flow of the text. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally repetitive. The progression of ideas is clear, and the letter is easy to follow from start to finish. To reach a higher band, ensure that cohesive devices are used more naturally to link sentences and ideas.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'dissatisfaction', 'amenities', and 'accessible'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'the all town centres' (should be 'all the town centres') and 'speciality' (should be 'uniqueness' or 'distinctive features'). You also have some spelling errors like 'brifly' and 'hopr'. While these do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more careful proofreading. The vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, but it lacks the precision and flexibility required for higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the conditional 'I would be delighted if...' and the 'Not only... but also' construction. There are several grammatical errors, including 'the all town centres', 'is almost similar' (redundant), 'one of the biggest multiplex theater' (should be 'theaters'), and 'No other centers has' (subject-verb agreement error). While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your message. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and pluralization rules, as these are recurring issues in your writing.
