Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear sir,

I am writing this letter to express my views regarding how town centers are designed not same in my country.

I am not fully agree with the given article in a national newspaper because the first reason is the area of the cities as some are built in small area and others are made in more space that further makes the amenities enough and limited for the people in both the situations. Secondly, the variations in the design of houses are applied according to the weather conditions in many town centers in my country.

Furthermore, the town where I am residing is not look same from most other towns in my country. Because there is the board of education that is responsible to take actions related to education is situated in my town that makes it popular in my country. Moreover, the other thing in my town that is unique is low level of pollution as compare to the other towns because it is situated in a hilly area.

I want to offer you the guided tour with my uncle who is a professional in this field. I hope you accept my offer and agree with my views.

I will be thankful to you for your understanding.

Yours sincerely,

Harpinder Singh.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have addressed all three bullet points of the prompt, which is a positive start. You clearly stated your disagreement with the article, explained why your town is unique, and extended an invitation for a tour. However, the development of your ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, your explanation of why town centers differ due to 'area' and 'weather' is a bit vague and could have been expanded with more concrete examples. To reach a higher band, ensure that your arguments are fully developed and directly linked to the prompt's premise about town center uniformity. Your tone is generally appropriate for a letter to an editor, though it could be slightly more formal.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter follows a logical structure, with each paragraph addressing a specific part of the instructions. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'Moreover', and 'Secondly' to link your ideas. However, the flow between sentences is occasionally mechanical, and some transitions feel a bit forced. Additionally, the paragraphing is somewhat inconsistent; the body paragraphs could be better balanced to improve the overall progression of your argument. Improving the variety of your linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear, singular focus would help you achieve a higher score in this criterion.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

Your vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to communicate your ideas clearly. You use some relevant terms like 'amenities', 'variations', and 'professional'. However, there are instances of awkward phrasing, such as 'designed not same' and 'is not look same', which limit your ability to express more complex ideas with precision. To improve, focus on using more natural collocations and avoiding repetitive sentence structures. Expanding your range of vocabulary to include more descriptive adjectives and precise nouns related to urban planning would significantly enhance your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede the flow of your writing, such as 'I am not fully agree' (should be 'I do not fully agree') and 'is situated in a hilly area' (missing article). There are also issues with subject-verb agreement and word order, for example, 'the town where I am residing is not look same'. While your meaning is generally clear, these persistent errors in basic grammar and sentence construction prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and correct verb forms will be key to improvement.
