Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Editor,

I am writing this letter to express my enthusiastic concern for the information about my town centre which is provided by you in your article.

Actually, I read in your newspaper yesterday that all town centres in my nation provide similar facilities. In these amenities education, medical, and transportation are included. Honestly, I am totally agree with this fact as I personally enjoy all these offers in my hometown.

However, town centre in my city is little bit different from other centres. The fact which creates differentiation between them is exterior as well as interior of my town centre that is totally distinct from all others. Moreover, members of town centres used antique piece of equipments and decoration which is unusual in this contemporary era. Additionally, instead of building in crowded area, it is located at that place covered with greenery.

Furthermore, it would be great if you can visit my town in order to correct your perception regarding all town centres. Also, there will be an exhibition in the next week, if you get free time please join us. Thank you for considering my request.

Yours faithfully,

Jyoti Dharma

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed all three bullet points of the task. You clearly stated which parts of the article you agreed with, explained the unique features of your town centre, and extended an invitation for a tour. However, the development of your ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, when describing the town centre's uniqueness, the explanation regarding 'antique piece of equipments' and the location is a bit vague. To reach a higher band, you should provide more specific, descriptive details about what makes the town centre distinct, rather than just stating that it is different. Your tone is appropriate for a formal letter to an editor.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. You have used some cohesive devices such as 'However', 'Moreover', and 'Furthermore' to link your ideas. However, the use of these devices is sometimes mechanical or slightly unnatural. For example, the transition 'Actually, I read in your newspaper' is not the most effective way to start a paragraph in a formal letter. Additionally, some sentences are slightly disjointed, such as the transition between the description of the town centre and the invitation to visit. Improving the flow between sentences would enhance the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, but there are several instances of awkward word choice and collocation errors. For example, 'enthusiastic concern' is an oxymoron and does not fit the context. You also used 'piece of equipments', but 'equipment' is an uncountable noun and should not be pluralized. Phrases like 'all these offers' are also slightly unnatural in this context. While your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning, you need to focus on using more precise collocations and avoiding basic errors in word form to achieve a higher score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors throughout the text, such as 'I am totally agree' (should be 'I totally agree'), 'town centre in my city is little bit different' (missing an article 'the'), and 'at that place covered with greenery' (awkward phrasing). While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your message, they are frequent enough to impact the overall accuracy. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement, the correct use of articles, and ensuring that complex sentences are constructed without errors.
