- say which points in the article you agree with
- explain ways in which your town centre is different from most other town centres
- offer to give a guided tour of your town to the writer of the article
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir,
i read the article in the news about all town centers in pakistan looking the same. I don't necessarily agree with all the points even though some of them make a lot of sense. I would say it was an overgenerlization on your part and if you look closely at the new town centers yoou see a lot more diversity overall especially compared to a few years back. I think there has been a lot of improvement on the international brands front as they are not available everywhere which makes some town centers more appealing than others. Not all the town centers have same activities either, for example there is one place only which has an ice skating ring and only one with a live theatre. I personally prefer the places with more affordable options to go with my family while I might choose a different place to go out with my friends. I urge you to pay a visit to lahore and it would be my honour to host you and give you a guided tour of town centers in my city. Thank you!

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response successfully covers all the bullet points outlined in the prompt, resulting in a clear overall position. You address the newspaper article by stating which points you agree with, such as noting that some parts of the article make a lot of sense, while explaining that you feel it is an overgeneralization. You also outline distinct ways your town centre is different by mentioning the availability of unique amenities like an ice skating rink and a live theatre. Furthermore, you successfully offer to give a guided tour of your town to the writer. However, some ideas tend to overgeneralise and could benefit from deeper extension and support, which places this response comfortably at the targeted level where all parts are adequately addressed with a clear position throughout.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The letter maintains a coherent overall arrangement and flows reasonably well, but it suffers from a major structural weakness: the entire body of the letter is written as a single, dense block paragraph following the salutation. While there is a clear logical progression from addressing the article to describing your town and finally offering a tour, the lack of paragraph breaks makes the text feel mechanical and difficult to navigate. Cohesive devices are minimal, relying mostly on basic conjunctions and reference words like 'for example' and 'which'. To achieve a higher level, you must divide your ideas into distinct paragraphs—such as separating your reaction to the article, the description of your town's unique features, and the invitation—and employ a wider, more flexible range of cohesive devices.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
Your vocabulary choice provides an adequate range for the task, allowing you to successfully convey your opinions and describe local amenities. You attempt some less common vocabulary and functional phrasing, such as 'overgenerlization', 'diversity', and 'appealing'. However, there are notable spelling errors ('overgenerlization', 'yoou') and minor word-choice inaccuracies that prevent the vocabulary from reaching a higher standard. While communication is never impeded by these slips, the range remains somewhat basic and repetitive in places. To improve this area, focus on expanding your use of precise collocation and less common lexical items while eliminating spelling mistakes through careful proofreading.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You demonstrate a workable mix of simple and complex sentence forms, successfully constructing multi-clause sentences such as 'I would say it was an overgenerlization on your part and if you look closely at the new town centers yoou see a lot more diversity overall especially compared to a few years back.' There is a good attempt at controlling grammar and punctuation, and the errors that do persist—such as missing capitalization ('i read'), missing commas in complex sentences, and occasional punctuation slips ('Thank you!')—rarely impede communication. The response shows glimpses of the higher band through its variety of complex structures, but frequent minor mechanical errors and punctuation lapses keep it at the current level. Focusing on tighter sentence demarcation and punctuation will enhance your grammatical control.
