Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing this letter to express my opinion regarding one of the article that I just read in today's newspaper about the similiarity of all the town centres in the country. I agree that the blueprint of the property looks similar to some extent.

The building of the town centre in my city has a different theme, it explains history, in terms of the paintings on the walls and the architecture. Additionally, it has a modern touch to it too, as one who will enter the premise can clearly notice it.

I would like you to see it for yourself. It will not only give you a better understanding of the town centre but also adds on to you expreince and through you many others like me who reads your prestigious newapaper will get to know about it as well. I would appreciate it if you came.

Looking forward to your letter.

Yours Truly,

XYZ

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt, earning a solid score in this area. You managed to mention the points in the newspaper article you agree with, such as the blueprint of the property looking similar to some extent. You also explained how your town centre differs by highlighting its historical paintings and architecture combined with a modern touch. Furthermore, you successfully included an offer to give a guided tour to the writer. However, some of these ideas are slightly under-developed rather than fully extended; for instance, the description of how your town centre is different could benefit from more specific details or examples, which prevents the response from reaching a higher band.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The writing demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a logical progression of ideas from the opening agreement to the description of the town and finally the invitation for a tour. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate your points into distinct sections. Cohesive devices are employed adequately throughout the text, such as 'Additionally' and 'It will not only give you', showing the traits required for a solid band while pointing toward more seamless integration. Nevertheless, referencing is occasionally slightly mechanical or repetitive, such as the frequent use of pronouns referring back to the town centre, which keeps the response within the current band rather than achieving full flexibility.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

An adequate range of vocabulary is used to accomplish the task. You make successful attempts at less common vocabulary items and phrases, such as 'blueprint of the property', 'modern touch', and 'prestigious newspaper'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice, spelling, and word forms that prevent a higher score, such as writing 'similiarity' instead of similarity, 'one of the article' instead of one of the articles, and 'expreince' instead of experience. Additionally, phrases like 'adds on to you expreince' show some awkwardness in collocation and word form, though these minor slips do not impede communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You demonstrate a reasonable mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and conditional structures such as 'as one who will enter the premise can clearly notice it' and 'I would appreciate it if you came.' There are some errors in grammar and punctuation present throughout the letter, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('many others like me who reads' instead of read), missing pluralization in prepositional phrases ('one of the article'), and slight prepositional awkwardness. Fortunately, these errors are relatively infrequent and rarely impede communication, allowing your intended meaning to remain clear to the reader.
