Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I recently read a Daily Mail article which argued that most towns in the UK look the same. Thia is not a view I endorse entireley.

Firstly, I will acknowledge that I found some aspects of the article to be accurate.

To a certain extent, I do believe a lot of town centres look quite similar here in the UK.

For example, most towns will have a pedestrian zone and a shopping centre.

Additionally, often certain buildings look similar, such as banks or bars and restaurants.

Despite this, I believe the town I am from is different in appearance to other town central areas. In my hometown, one uncommon factor is the water feature that is present in the town centre. I feel this is unique in comparison to other towns. Therefore, I do not agree that all town centres look the same.

It would be a great privelage for myself to offer you a tour of my hometown and its centre to exemplify what makes it special. Please let me know if this would interest you and we can arrange to meet for a walking tour of my hometown.

Yours faithfully,

Niall

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response successfully covers all parts of the prompt in a formal semi-official letter format. You clearly state which points you agree with by acknowledging that a lot of UK town centres feature pedestrian zones, shopping centres, and similar building styles. You then explain how your town centre is different by mentioning a distinctive water feature, and you appropriately offer a guided tour to the author of the article. Your position is clear throughout, and the ideas are extended and supported, although the development of the unique town features is slightly concise. To reach a higher level, you could expand more thoroughly on the distinct architectural or cultural aspects of your town rather than relying primarily on a single water feature example.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

Your letter demonstrates clear logical organisation and progression throughout. The opening salutation and paragraph introduce the purpose of the letter effectively, and each subsequent point is logically separated into paragraphs. You use appropriate cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Additionally', and 'Despite this' to connect your ideas smoothly, although some transitions feel slightly mechanical. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, guiding the reader naturally from your agreement with the article to your counter-arguments and finally to your invitation. For further progression, try integrating cohesive devices more seamlessly within sentences rather than solely relying on transitional adverbs at the beginning of paragraphs.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'endorse entireley' and 'exemplify'. However, there are some spelling and word choice errors, including 'Thia' instead of 'This', 'entireley' with an extra 'e', and 'privelage' instead of 'privilege'. You also used the phrase 'town central areas', which sounds slightly unnatural compared to 'central town areas'. While these lexical and spelling errors do not impede communication, they highlight the need for greater precision in word forms and spelling to achieve a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0

You use a good mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over your grammatical structures with frequent error-free sentences. Examples such as 'Despite this, I believe the town I am from is different in appearance to other town central areas' show a good variety of clauses and accurate punctuation. There are a few minor slips, such as the awkward phrasing 'It would be a great privelage for myself to offer you', which could be phrased more naturally. Overall, your control of verb forms, tenses, and sentence boundaries is solid, and grammar errors are infrequent and never impede communication.
