Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to give an advice about the recent article which your newspaper published about the town centres.

I am Karthik Yedukondala, working as an IT professional and living in the town centre since it was established. Firstly, I am very grateful about the news representation of the town centre. Almost everything you wrote is true but some of the information is misleading. I strongly agree about the building structure, establishment s, and many more.

However, Our town centre is much more different than the one you compared. Our building have multi- storage facility available for the local formers to store the produce. In addition, the intersections are divided into two parts: one for the locals and the other for the corporate businesses. The other town centre you compare does not have any of these facilities to help the town.

Moreover, I would like to offer you a guided tour of our town centre to show the architecture and the principle foundations of the town centre. I hope the tour will give you a lot of information about the town centre. And can be helpful for your future references and knowledge.

Thanks for your attention to this matter. I look forward to meet you.

Sincerely,

Karthik Yedukondala.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task, meeting the functional requirements of a general letter. You successfully mention which points in the article you agree with, such as the building structure and establishments, explain how your town centre differs through specific infrastructure like storage facilities and intersection divisions, and offer a guided tour. However, some ideas are more fully developed than others. While the agreement and the tour offer are clearly stated, the explanation of how your town centre is different from most others remains somewhat underdeveloped and relies on general assertions rather than a fully expanded description. Nevertheless, the tone is appropriately polite and serves the purpose of the letter well.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response achieves a coherent overall arrangement and fully meets the lower band while showing part of the next. Information and ideas are logically organized with a clear beginning and ending. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to separate different points, such as agreement, differences, and the tour offer. Cohesive devices are employed, including sequencing words like 'Firstly' and 'However', and transitional phrases like 'In addition' and 'Moreover'. However, some cohesion is slightly mechanical or repetitive, and referencing is occasionally unclear, such as the ambiguous use of 'The other town centre you compare'. To reach a higher level, transitions could be integrated more smoothly and naturally.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

An adequate range of vocabulary is used for the task. You attempt less common vocabulary such as 'IT professional', 'establishments', 'multi-storage facility', and 'corporate businesses', but there are noticeable lexical errors and awkward collocations. Examples include 'give an advice' instead of 'give advice', 'news representation' instead of 'coverage' or 'depiction', 'building structure' instead of 'architectural style', and 'local formers' instead of 'farmers'. There are also spelling or word-form issues such as 'establishment s' with an intrusive space. These errors do not impede communication, but they restrict the lexical score because of the lack of precision and control when attempting less common items.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

There is a mix of simple and complex sentence forms used throughout the letter, such as 'I am writing to give an advice about the recent article which your newspaper published...' and 'I strongly agree about the building structure...'. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, but they rarely impede communication. Noticeable errors include article misuse ('give an advice', 'living in the town centre', 'the building have'), pluralization and agreement errors ('Our building have multi-storage facility', 'principle foundations' where 'principal' was intended), and punctuation/fragment issues ('And can be helpful for your future references and knowledge.'). A wider variety of error-free complex structures is needed to move beyond this level.
