Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to provide you with some information about hometown differences related to your article that was published in national newspaper.
I am Karamveer from Chandigarh. In your article, you wrote about town centres in our India; all look like similar in structures, public services, and transport systems. I agree with these points.
Unfortunately, I am dissatisfied with other things. The first thing is, every city is unique in their ways; system and service could be same, however their history and links could not be same. For example, our city Chandigarh is well-known for their connections as It is same capital for two states Punjab and Haryana. Additionally, if we talk about lifestyle, we can see this city adopts a more modern lives as compared to other towns.
I would really appreciate it if you could come, I will surely provide you with a guided tour of our town. As a result you can develop your ideas about this topic and again publish something differnet about towns.
Please let me know if you need any further information.
Your faithfully,
Karamveer Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address all three requested points: you identify agreement with the article’s claims about structures, public services and transport, describe Chandigarh’s links to two states and its modern lifestyle, and offer the writer a guided tour. Your position—that you do not fully agree—is clear. The explanation of Chandigarh’s distinctiveness is relevant, but it is not fully developed: the connection to Punjab and Haryana is mentioned without explaining how it shapes the town centre, and “a more modern” lifestyle remains general. The tour offer is clear, though the purpose of publishing something different could be expressed more precisely. Adding one or two concrete local features would make the response more fully supported.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter has a clear overall sequence: it introduces the reason for writing, responds to the article, explains the difference you see, and closes with an invitation. Paragraphing helps the reader follow these stages, and phrases such as “For example” and “Additionally” signal examples and added points. Some links are less smooth or precise, however. “Unfortunately, I am dissatisfied with other things” does not clearly connect your disagreement to the preceding claims, while “As a result” does not express a clear cause-and-effect relationship between the tour and the writer’s ideas. The progression is generally understandable, but more direct transitions and clearer referencing would make cohesion more flexible and less mechanical.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use enough vocabulary to communicate the main points, including “public services,” “transport systems,” “connections,” and “guided tour.” There are also attempts at more specific phrasing, such as describing Chandigarh as the capital for two states. However, several word choices and collocations are noticeably awkward, including “hometown differences,” “look like similar,” “modern lives,” and “publish something differnet.” These sometimes make the reader pause to interpret your meaning, although the overall message remains clear. Aim for more natural combinations and accurate word forms, and proofread spelling. A broader, more precise range would help you explain what makes the city distinctive rather than relying on general terms such as “things” and “same.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, for example, “The first thing is, every city is unique in their ways; system and service could be same, however their history and links could not be same.” This shows an effort to connect contrasting ideas, and the message is generally understandable. Some grammatical errors remain in agreement, articles, and sentence construction: “every city is unique in their ways” has mismatched reference, and “could be same” needs an article. The sentence beginning “I would really appreciate it if you could come” also joins two independent ideas with a comma. Capitalisation and punctuation are inconsistent in places, such as “as It.” More accurate control of these patterns, alongside varied sentence structures, would strengthen the letter.
