Overall Band Score: 5.5 · Cambridge IELTS 16 · 2026-10-10
IELTS Writing Task 1 question
You have just read an article in a national newspaper which claims that town centres in your country all look very similar to each other. You don't fully agree with this opinion.
Write a letter to the editor of the newspaper. In your letter
- say which points in the article you agree with
- explain ways in which your town centre is different from most other town centres
- offer to give a guided tour of your town to the writer of the article
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 5.5)
To WSJ editor at New's division,
I agree with the editor's argument about the recent blog of our town centres to give same visual appeal to the broader audience at the first look. But, I believe they are distinct in ways that were not so obvious if ain't given greater thought.
The design planning, appearence, location seems quiet predictable where bustling city intersections and various shops and supermarket are around. Also, some of the government offices like hydro-utility , post, DMV and other are an easy guess. To the topic of familarity some things needs to feel easy and predictable for the local and another state people for easy findings.
Despite of the common patterns observed, my town gives little different vibe in terms of the muncipality choice of their location of town plaza. Because no nearby markets with high population were visible; this might be due to space constraint that recently spiked with additional arrival of foriegn people.
I would be more than happy to schedule a tour at Irvin,TX for detailed oversight. Looking forward to more of interesting editorial content on newspaper.
Regards,
Daniel

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You address the main purpose of the letter: you partly agree that town centres share predictable features, describe a difference in your town, and offer a tour. The point about familiar shops and public offices explains what you accept in the article, while the town plaza’s location is presented as a contrast. However, the disagreement is not fully clear: the plaza is mentioned, but the explanation about population and space is difficult to follow and does not show precisely how Irvin differs from other centres. The tour offer is also brief and lacks a practical detail, such as when or what you would show. Develop the distinctive features and make your position more explicit.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The letter has a recognisable progression from your response to the article, to shared features, to a local difference and an invitation. Paragraphing helps separate these points, and phrases such as “Despite of the common patterns observed” signal a contrast. Some connections are less clear or mechanical, however. The second paragraph moves from predictable design to the need for familiarity without clearly linking the examples to your agreement, and “this might be due to space constraint” has an unclear reference. The opening and closing also do not follow a fully natural letter format. Use clearer links between each claim and its explanation, and make references explicit so the reader can follow the argument smoothly.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You attempt a range of topic-related vocabulary, including “visual appeal,” “bustling city intersections,” “municipality,” and “space constraint.” These choices show an effort to describe urban features beyond basic terms. However, several spelling and word-choice errors make parts of the message less clear, including “appearence,” “familarity,” “muncipality,” and “foriegn.” Some combinations are also unnatural, such as “recent blog of our town centres” and “detailed oversight.” Choose more precise, conventional expressions and check spelling carefully. For example, describe the article’s claim directly, and use “guided tour” or “closer look” rather than “detailed oversight.” This would make your vocabulary more reliable and easier to understand.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a contrast introduced by “Despite…” and a reason introduced by “because.” However, control is uneven, and several sentence patterns are faulty or incomplete. For example, “The design planning, appearence, location seems…” has a subject–verb agreement problem and an unclear list structure; “some things needs to feel” also has incorrect agreement. The phrase “if ain't given greater thought” does not form a suitable conditional clause, and “Because no nearby markets…” is a fragment. These errors sometimes make relationships between ideas difficult to interpret. Practise building complete clauses, checking singular and plural subjects, and using standard conditional forms.
