Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 5.5)
Dear Sir,
I have just read your article in a national newspaper claiming that town centres in our country all look very similar to each other. In this article, I agree with your points claiming that these centres are very crowdy and busy specially on the weekend.
All the town centres in our country have distinct structures. My town centre is built in a different way than other town centres in our country. The architectural design and the area is much bigger than other town centres. There is a unique way to enter the centre of my town. The design of the gates are composed and firm. The town centre building comprises of a combination of metal and stone.
I would be glad to offer you a guided tour of my town. In this way, you will get more to know about my town. Please let me know if you are willing.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You address the three requested points: you identify agreement with the article’s view that centres are busy, describe features of your town centre, and offer the writer a guided tour. However, the response is 146 words, four words below the required minimum, and the points are only partly developed. The description focuses on size, gates and building materials, but does not give a concrete example that clearly shows how your centre differs from most others. The tour offer is polite, though it could include a specific invitation or proposed time. Also, “I agree with your points” makes your disagreement with the article’s overall claim less clear. State explicitly that you agree about crowds but disagree that all centres look alike, then support this position with a distinctive local feature.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The letter has a recognisable structure, with an opening, a paragraph about your town centre and a closing offer, so the reader can follow its basic purpose. The ideas within the description also move from general differences to architectural details. However, progression is limited: the opening does not clearly connect your agreement about busy centres to your disagreement with the article’s main claim, and the description lists features without explaining how they demonstrate uniqueness. Linking phrases such as “In this way” are understandable but do not add much development. Improve the flow by making your position explicit first, then grouping the distinctive features with an explanation of why they set your town apart, before making the tour offer.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use enough vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “architectural design,” “unique,” “combination of metal and stone,” and “guided tour.” These choices suit the topic and show some attempt to be specific. However, the range is limited, and several word choices or forms are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “crowdy,” “specially,” “composed and firm,” and “get more to know.” The spelling error “Regrads” also affects the presentation of the letter. These issues do not prevent the reader from understanding your meaning, but they make parts of the description less precise. Choose natural collocations and check spelling; for example, describe the gates as “distinctive” or “ornate” if that accurately reflects their appearance.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You communicate using mostly straightforward sentence patterns, and the letter includes some longer constructions, such as “I have just read your article … claiming that town centres … look very similar.” Meaning is generally clear, but grammatical control is uneven. For example, “the area is much bigger” and “the design of the gates are” show problems with agreement or number, while “built in a different way than” and “comprises of” use faulty grammatical patterns. The sentence “In this way, you will get more to know about my town” also has an awkward construction. To improve, check singular and plural subjects carefully, and practise standard patterns such as “different from” and “comprises.” Vary sentence structures while keeping them accurate.
