Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir,

I am writing this letter to give my opinion about the news published in your newspaper about town centers. I read this news on last Monday and I am partly disagree with these news.

I agree to some of the articles are mentioned in your newspaper is right about majority of town centers. Firstly, many town centres have similar infrastructure for shopping malls, restaurants, and parks. As a result, customers may find these places quite similar. Secondly, many town centers are designed by the same architects, so it is quite possible that they have similarities.

For example, my city, Surat has modern town centre, which offers many facilities to local residents. Surat is famous for its diamond and textile industries. Moreover, The city has colorful markets, where people can get wide range of fabrics and traditional clothes.

I would be happy to offer you a guided tour of my city so that you can explore traditional markets, try local foods and experience unique culture.

I hope you consider my suggestions and waiting for a positive response from your side.

Yours faithfully,

Hani kathiriya

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address the three requested points: you identify similarities you accept, describe features of Surat, and offer the article’s writer a guided tour. Your position is clear in “I am partly disagree,” and the diamond and textile industries, colorful markets, and traditional clothes give relevant local detail. However, the explanation of what makes Surat different is more developed than your agreement with the article, which remains general: shopping malls, restaurants, parks, and shared architects are mentioned without a specific example or explanation. The tour offer is appropriate but could be made more personal by suggesting when or where you would begin. Develop each point with comparable detail and maintain a suitably formal letter style throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a clear overall arrangement: an opening and position, a paragraph agreeing with the article, a description of Surat, and a closing offer. Sequencing phrases such as “Firstly,” “Secondly,” and “Moreover” help readers follow the points, and the progression is easy to understand. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent organisation and shows some control of paragraphing. To make the flow more flexible and precise, avoid relying mainly on list-like transitions and connect ideas more explicitly—for example, explain how Surat’s markets contrast with the shopping facilities mentioned earlier. The final sentence, “I hope you consider my suggestions and waiting for a positive response,” also feels abrupt and does not smoothly complete the offer.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “infrastructure,” “diamond and textile industries,” “colorful markets,” and “traditional clothes.” These details help communicate the character of Surat, and the meaning remains clear despite some inaccurate choices. However, several phrases are awkward or imprecise, such as “the news published,” “I am partly disagree,” and “get wide range of fabrics.” “Modern town centre” is also broad and does not convey a distinctive feature as precisely as the later market details do. Aim for more natural collocations and precise descriptions, while keeping the formal tone consistent. Check spelling conventions too, such as choosing either “centres” or “centers” consistently.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use both simple sentences and some more developed structures, including “so that you can explore traditional markets, try local foods and experience unique culture.” The main message is generally understandable, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “I am partly disagree” needs a correctly formed verb, and “I agree to some of the articles are mentioned … is right” has an unclear clause structure and subject–verb agreement. In the closing, “I hope you consider my suggestions and waiting” lacks a parallel verb form. Articles and sentence punctuation also need attention in phrases such as “offers many facilities” and “get wide range.” Practise accurate verb patterns and clause construction while retaining your attempts at complex sentences.
